M1015 not compatible with certain motherboards?

I'm using an Asrock Z77 Extreme 4 (BIOS 2.90) in my server. When I got and installed my M1015 controller, it recognized it and installed the drivers automatically (Win10 Pro), but I had an error that the device failed to start.

I thought maybe it was a slot issue, so I moved it to a different slot. Worked, recognized the attached drives, I thought all was well. Rebooted, same thing with device failed to start. WTH?

I've reset the BIOS to defaults, tried setting the PCIe slots to dedicated 3.0, 2.0, and Auto, but nothing seems to work. At best I can get the card to come up and work for one power cycle, but as soon as the OS restarts it has the same issue again.

There was a note of the board not liking some consumer motherboards on another forum, but other than that I'm not seeing any particular issues.

Anyone have any experience or suggestions? It's an SLI board so I'm wondering about maybe putting a PCIe 1x card in one of the slots to "force" it to give full 8X to the RAID card, but I don't even know if that would work.

Consumer boards in general often don't cooperate with actual hardware RAID controllers. Is it running in default mode or has it been flashed to IT/IR?

I was hoping to run RAID10 with 4, 6TB drives. I didn't know if I'd get the same redundancy and performance with storage spaces.
