M$'s plan to tie the O/S with the BIOS

Bill Gates denies it. He said that he never heard of any talks between Pheonix and MS, and in fact the last time he talked to anybody from that company it was five years ago. Then he asked if they were realy still in business.

😛

He also said that one of the strengths of Windows is how fast they can get patches out for there systems. He said that their turnaround rate for patches is 24 hours of realization of a vunerability.

Strange it seems that it took three months for a certian little patch to be created for something called.. what a DCOM-whatsis? And I am told that it still hasn't been fixed properly... hm. Must be pro-linux FUD invading my brain.

Well, thanks heaven we have people like Bill Gates and Microsoft watching our back for us. I mean, without them we would have all these problems with viruses and worms and stuff. Dirty nasty hackers.

Hell I was thinking about getting a new copy of XP for my other computer and wanted to save money by getting a OEM liscence, but now I that "Billy" (that's what I call him in my fantasies) has made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside I am going full throttle and get a retail version!

The whole idea is that when they start doing this, you won't be ABLE to use linux.

But it's not like they can make older hardware disappear. And if/when this does ever happen, I think people will quickly revolt and it will fade into history.

and i doubt that all mobo makes will go in for using a bios tied to windows. maybe just boards that go to dell and hp and gateway and the like

but bare boards, for say...enthusiasts and system builders? i doubt theyd use a windows only bios in those, nobody wants to be bullied and they _should_ have the forsight to avoid this.

makes me wonder, how fast could someone get the bios hacked so anything can be run on it? *looks over at the xbox*
i have a feeling it would be doable

Don't forget you have PowerPC's anyways.

With IBM's technology they are creating a almost commodity-level platform that is mostly superior to x86. Hopefully other people pick up on it and begin making more workstation class computers.

Anyways with 21+% of the server market we will always have server level (or at least server-capable) motherboards and such at our disposal. That's a pretty big market to dump just because Microsoft says so.

Otherwise... Bioses can be replaced. Don't forget OpenBios. There is a reason they decided it would be a good idea.

Other then that, I doubt it will realy turn out that bad. Dual-Bioses anyone?

If the bios was tied to the OS it seems it would be easier to create viruses that attack the bios and make the computer completely unbootable.

Only if your able to write to it. If your not able to do that it isn't any more dangerous then it is now.

Anyways even if it did open up more security holes it doesn't matter. With Microsoft's trusted computing initiative we soon won't worry about viruses and stuff like that. Gee, I can't wait for longhorn to come out. I mean 3-d desktops! Wow, that's something those Linux and Mac geeks won't have the ability to deal with! WinFS is going to rock, with MS helping me it would make it so much easier to manage my mp3 collections.

Some BIOSes are flashable from within Windows now, so nothing in that matter would have changed.
