I bought a new MSI G4TI4600 vid card from compgeeks. The card will not even display the bios and text boot screens correctly, missing columns of characters! In short, it won't even display "native" VGA. I gave my ATI 8500 card to my son, now in his dual 1800+ machine(and working FINE I might add!).
Does this mean that the card is defective from the vendor? I have a VIA KR7A-133 mobo. Yes, I know about the problem with some drivers for the KT-133 chipset, but this board will not display native VGA, waaay before drivers come into play...

What do you OC Ho's think????
"Note to Self"

Dual 1800+'s in the same case,
MAKE LOTS OF HEAT ! ! !
Right Shux?

Now need lots of :beer::beer::beer::beer::beer:

If a DC cruncher is down, then this is the place!

Did you uninstall the ATI drivers prior to installing the new one? What bios version are you running on the MB?

How does it look when you get into windows? And I'm assuming you've downloaded and installed the latest drivers for the vid card?

it is possible that the card is bad, have you tried it in another machine? There is also the possibility that the card will not work right with that specific board. When I upgraded my mobo months ago to an 8RDA+ I had to buy a new video card because of some voltage issue. So first check to see if that video card works in another system if it does that same thing RMA it. If it works poke around and see if there are any issues with that card board combo.

Yes, I uninstalled the ATI control panel and as for the bios, I have not flashed it since 2 weeks after I bought it(to update it to the latest at that time).
The 2 times that I have made it into Windows Safe Mode, the video is poor quality and the display has vertical translucent lines every 1/4 inch. And, yes the first time that I made it into Safe Mode, I downloaded the latest driver for the card. I just saw that they have a specific driver for my mobo/chipset and I will try that tonight. But, still doesn't explain why the missing columns of text during boot up. :(

I will also try it in my son's new machine to see if the boot screens display correctly. That should tell me if the board is DOA or not.
Thanks guys!

M S I..........P O S ! ?
From my experence, no.
The first thing to do is try it in another machine, if that doesnt work try to exchange it for the same model. If it does work in the other computer, put it up for sale or return it (with restock fee) and buy a different card. Thats about all I know what to do.

It's possible that there's a poor contacts with the AGP port. One way to check if the video card is DOA is to plug it in another motherboard.

Also, try to remove all other cards from the motherboard, just video card. reset the cmos & even go to the bios and choose reset configuration data. If you still have problems seeng the BIOS bootup screen, I suggest you RMA the card back to computer geeks. If on the other hand, the video display got better, you probably had a conflict with another device.

Just another note, just yesterday morning, this machine, with the ATI 8500, was getting
steady 140 fps in Q3. I just switched Video cards and now it won't boot. Maybe the
MSI Ti4600 has a little more horsepower than my ATI, but I don't think it would make
THAT much difference.

Tonight:
1. try MSI board in son's pc
2. try ATI board back in my pc
3. try driver specifically for my KR7A-133
4. rma the board
in that order...

Sounds like a good plan.
Computer problems that seem to have no cause are the worst type.

Update:

2. I tried resetting the board, no luck.
1. Took it to my son's Tyan Tiger dually, same exact problem, missing rows of chars.
on the boot screens. Large "dots" where letters and numbers should be.
3. Tried mobo specific driver, POS, did not work...
4. Calling for RMA.....and the beat goes on....

Best of luck. MSI's from what I read in the other forums cause a lot of problems... at least in the motherboard aspect. This is my first reading of a video card issue. :(
