M-Audio Studiophile AV-40 vs Samson Studiodock 4i

Has anyone compared these two sets of speakers? I'm looking to replace my dead Klipsch iFi, and I'm not buying another Klipsch product. Not to get into it, but Klipsch really shit the bed - there's a defect w/ either the dock or the volume control IC in these and they haven't done anything for anyone reporting the issue.

Uses would be normal PC uses - music and games.

There's a lot of positive press for the AV-40, so I'm leaning in that direction. The Samson is interesting b/c of the integrated dock, but I can't actually find much in the way of reputable opinions on these.

Anyone?

Depending on your budget, there are lots of nice active studio monitors <1000$ per pair (and plenty beyond that price too).

JBL, Mackie, KRK, Dynaudio, Audioengine, all have several offerings <1000$ per pair. Genelec is also another good one, but usually very pricey.

I just got some AV30's off Woot and they sound, frankly, amazing. Far better than my Z-5500's. I'd say for one person, much better than even my Dayton BR-1s. Also better than my wife's Klipsch ProMedia 2.1's, which I thought were the best 2.1 system for computers. Totally happy with my AV30's. Clarity is unreal.

Thanks for the info, everyone. I do appreciate it. sdi - I hadn't found that thread when I searched, sorry 'bout that.

I ended up going and getting the AV-40s last night. $150 was about as much as I wanted to spend, since these are computer speakers for the basement, and I just didn't find much good info on the Samson products. I have to say, these are incredible. Better than my broken iFi ever was, and without a sub.

Solid MDF enclosures, nice touch to include foam dampening pads. I'm using the RCA input and am getting a little bit of hiss at max volume, but in all practicality, I will never have these turned up that high. Even at 25% on the knob, they're plenty loud with as good an SQ as you're going to get for something connected to integrated audio.

I ALMOST ordered the Behrenger model in the same price range that has its own DAC and an optical input, but that would've meant waiting and is overkill for my needs anyway.

Oh, my local Guitar Center had these in stock. $150, same as Amazon and everyone else. Was nice to be able to go see them first before buying.

Did you listen to anything else?

I didn't - nothing else in stock that was reasonably close to my price range. They had some higher end M-Audio that I saw.

Basically, I just wanted to make sure these sounded good before buying them. Very happy with the purchase.

ok. as long as you are happy with them, that is the important part.

Very happy. Good SQ and balanced. I've been reading a lot of reviews, and it seems that if you try and save a few bucks, a lot of cheaper sets (even by the same brand) are way out of balance.
