i currently own a montego ddl and im planning on upgrading my surround sound system from 5.1 to 7.1, im wondering if anyone owns the revolution 7.1 and if they can tell me that they get 7.1 dolby digital live through the spdif, then it would seal it for me and i'd probly get it.

Ok, I just hooked up one of my old THX speakers on one of my rear channels to set up 6.1 to test <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="https://mywebspace.wisc.edu/spmclaughlin/web/Random/Log%20vs%20Rock.JPG"><a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="https://mywebspace.wisc.edu/spmclaughlin/web/Random/Log%20vs%20Rock.JPG"><a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="https://mywebspace.wisc.edu/spmclaughlin/web/Random/Log%20vs%20Rock.JPG">https://mywebspace.wisc.edu/spmcl.........Random/Log%20vs%20Rock.JPG</a></a></a> ;)

Just wanted to make sure I'd get DDEX from the DD stream my X-Mystique is outputting and yeah, it's working.

Once you hook up 7.1 speakers as long as your receiver supports DDEX, you should get 7.1 output from the DD stream your Montego is sending.

I'm not exactly sure on DDEX encoded material, but I think that's always matrixed into the other channels?
For DD-ES, you can either have a 6th channel discrete or matrixed into the others.

Here's a list of DTS DVDs and the ES ones if they're matrixed or discrete.
http://www.spannerworks.net/reference/10_6a.asp

5.1 is really the standard still. I think the Bluegears X-Plosion is still a 5.1 output when it's doing real time DTS encoding.

Your receiver should upmix these 5.1 outputs to play on all 7.1 speakers though (at least my HK AVR-325 and Pioneer 1014 do this).

It seems that 6.1 discrete would be the best you could do right now unless DDEX can be 7.1 discrete (but I think the two rear channels are playing the same thing anyway), but there isn't anything out there right now that can do 6.1 digital discrete for a soundcard afaik.

I think the short version is: your Montego will play output on all your speakers even if you upgrade to 7.1

cool. i figured this card was pretty good, but for some reason i dont get the 7.1 option, another downside to this card is that they dont support winxp 64bit. dunno bout vista either, they got everything else covered though. oh and you have the same speakers as me, and the same kinda config i think, my amp on the back of the logitech went out and i had to get a regular reciver, now thats hooked up to my reciver and speakers. oh and i just found noticed the little sliders for the two additional speakers, but it wont give me the option to enable them.

$250 for 7.1 speakers is pretty darn low.

They might not be noticably better than the Logitechs you are using now.

Have you heard them?

Is there something wrong with your current receiver?

Seems like you're going to be spending about $500 and getting a marginal upgrade.

well my current system only puts out at a max, roughly 520w or so, those newer ones, put out something inthe area of 750-850w. these speakers are getting rather old, and the sub doesnt put out as much, i want a nicer sub, but it will run at least 150 to get one. my current sub, farts at anything above roughly -30dba, and i still have at least 1/4 more to go. so its rather lacking in my system.

All the wattage ratings are BS.

You're telling me that the Logitechs don't get loud enough for you?

If you can, try to do this in stages so that you'll be making worthwhile upgrades.

The speakers are old - is there something wrong with them?

The sub doesn't put out as much - here's a good budget sub http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=300-635
If you call them and ask to pricematch their $120 free shipping offer they were running for like 4 months, they might let you do it.

If your Kenwood is working now, it's probably not worth it to upgrade it. Spending more on the speakers is going to be a much bigger difference in performance in the end.

Wattage isn't everything.

Could you look up what model your Kenwood is?

Is your issue with the Kenwood that it's 5.1 and not 7.1?

The extra speaker connections you found might be for a second pair of main speakers. (A/B)

well not that its not 5.1, its that im looking to get a little more. the sattelites have had their fair share of work, they went from usa, to korea, to usa, to upsate new york, so they've been beaten quite a bit. and im looking to replace them. and they clutter up my desk, i dont have alot of room. i live in barracks(army) and the area i have is rather little. if you knew wall mounts id probly consider those instead. and that sub that is.

If you have the z-680s, those speakers can easily wall mount by just unscrewing the metal base and then flipping it around the other way.

You've flipped the bases around and can't mount them?

How big is the room you're trying to fill?

How loud to you want it to be? Do the satellites not get as loud with the Kenwood as it did with the Logitech sub amp?

I had no problems filling rooms that size 12x12 with the z-560s.

THX for computer speakers is different than HT THX certification.

They both don't mean much, but especially the computer speaker stuff.

There are some places that sell just the Logitech satellites as an alternative.

Would you be able to get out and do some demo-ing of some different stuff?

The Onkyo 780 HTIB set is in this range and it a good budget set if you still want to get the whole system.

Have you heard good things about that speaker set you had picked out? I don't remember seeing it before.

As a quick alternative, the Onkyo 780 speakers are available on their own.

Not that they are amazing or anything or necessarily better than the ones you mentioned, but I know those would be a solid choice on $250-ish.
