M*A*S*H Question

OutHouse

Lifer
Watching MASH and its the episode where that Korean girl fingers Radar as the father of her baby. Right before that, Henry is in Radars office when Capt Pak comes in to tell him the Korean family that just moved into the camp says the 4077 has 3 days to get the hell out.

Henry says. Pak what?s Korean for Suicide?
Pack says. That?s Japanese, we don?t do that sh*t

Did i hear that right? I have seen this show before and think i have picked it up the other times. If he didn?t say sh*t what did he say?

I remember that episode.

pak is that guy from Karate kid and Happy Days.

he said "That?s Japanese, we don?t do that shtick"

shtick

VARIANT FORMS: also schtick or shtik

NOUN: Slang 1. A characteristic attribute, talent, or trait that is helpful in securing recognition or attention: waiters in tropical attire are part of the restaurant's shtick. 2. An entertainment routine or gimmick.

ETYMOLOGY: Yiddish shtik, piece, routine, from Middle High German stücke, piece, from Old High German stukki, crust, fragment.

I was listening / watching Fabulous Baker Boys on TBS I think a few weeks ago. My in-laws were over and we were chatting and we had closed captioning on. Anyway, it was strange because there were a bunch of scenes in the end that were edited for language but the CC text came through original. F**K was in there like 10-15x it seems.

Anyway, stuff still seems to get by the censors. Funny about Shtick though...

One of the local radio stations has taken to not bleeping a few songs. Nickelback - Never Again for one.

He's drunk again
It's time to fight
Same old sh*t
Just on a different night
She grabs the gun
She's had enough
Tonight she'll find out
How f*cking
Tough is this man
Pulls the trigger
Just as fast as she can
Never again

And to think in the early '80s Highschool Confidental by Rough Trade use to be bleeped, when she sang "Is he screwing her?"

wow, thanks. amazing the censors let that air in the early 70's.
why?

shtick is Yiddish. Like tucos, or oy vey.

remeber this was 30 years ago. the writers clearly put that legal word in to replace the vulgar word to get away with it. he says it so fast it sounds a lot like sh*t.

Disclaimer: i was in no way offended by hearing this. i just thought it was strange and wasnt sure i heard it correctly especially when this show was aired during prime time in what 1971?

You mean they relaxed censorship since the 70's?
Let the censors burn in hell, it's (supposed to be) free speech in this country right.

No, it was a common word even back then.

But you don't get the joke do you?

A Korean, talking about a Japanese custom, while commenting in Yiddish.

A cross-cultural jab.

Heh, I was just watching the movie M*A*S*H last night was thinking about what kind of hell would be raised with a character named "Spearchucker" nowadays.

Especially considering the character was a black "ringer" for the football game. 😉
