I caught Lyme disease in Allegheny National Forest in 2012 on a dispersed camping trip.

Saw the tick, which I thought was a speck of dirt as I tried to scrape it off me. No telltale red-ring mark around the bite. About four weeks later - agonizing pain that traveled randomly through different joints of my body, high fevers that soaked my bed, to incredibly cold chill spells. One of two cases a year in my state.

Took antibiotics for 21 days, and literally the day after starting I felt fine. Went from 'kill me please' to 'I think I'm better' in 12 hours.

Got back from the 2013 trip a few days ago... funny to see my friends literally bathing in Deet in an attempt to keep ticks off them, after they heard what I went through. Managed my food this year to make sure I shit in the morning, and walked that 3KM in the wet morning to the toilet gladly.

Lyme disease is pretty common around here (Southern New England). It's not a cake walk, but it's not that big of a deal for a healthy adult either.

My brother has had it, my mom has had it, several friends and relatives have had it, etc. I've had ehrlichiosis (as far as I know). Everyone has turned out fine after a bit of treatment.

Same here, ticks are everywhere, and there are a lot of people getting lyme disease.

They don't mess around at the doctors though, if you even report that you had a tick on you they will start antibiotics, even if you haven't gotten a fever yet (I guess because if you wait for symptoms, it's too late, or they just like pushing antibiotics lol).

And a lot of people I know that have had normal fevers have also been advised to start treatment, only later to find out that it was nothing. I guess it's better to be safe than sorry.

Case of lyme disease reported a few miles away.

People are in a state of panic, local grocery store is cleaned out, all the canned goods are gone, bottled water shelves are empty, people standing in line for hours to buy a firearm, rumors going around about a lyme disease fueled zombie holocaust,,,,.

The first thought that sprang to mind was "This is God punishing Texas for....", and as I can't think of a decent punch line, I'll let someone else use it :)

the ticks are horrible this year. I was out in the back yard a couple nights ago and saw one casually strolling across the picnic table. Pulled a few off the dog already. Having the wilds but up to your back fence has its drawbacks.

That officially proves it-Texans are whimps. Stick to your scorpions and rattlers.

I live a few miles from the epicenter (Lyme, CT) and have had Lyme disease a couple of times-the vast majority of cases are really minor, a short course of antibiotics and you are fine. It's only the very rare case that really have problems. Also your chance of getting Lyme from a tick bite are something like 1-3% even here in the hot bed of the disease.
