Lycoris Linux distro...should I bother?

I have a friend who is in his 50s and I am trying to get him to try out linux.

Since I was young he has basically been somewhat of a "computer mentor" of mine, helping me learn what I now know.

FOrtunately, I have surpased his expectations, but he is still in the dark ages, finally installing windows 200 on his machines.

Basically I am trying to convince him that his 266mhz pII laptop will run better, and was interested in the Lycoris distro, as it seems very windows-similar.

ANy comments...

Is mandrake a better choice...Thanks

i would say mandrake. its quite simple to use. if hes going to use lycoris because its like windows, he might as well stick with windows.

All right..I was interested because the enite distro was so small..even with al lthe options, yet it still offered a nice little package, and probably a speed boost over win2k on his p266 laptop

As i was testing Distros, I tried Lycoris. Used build 44. I liked it, it really is a clean and fast distro. I would use it if I were giving it to a person to just use as a windows only replacement. A few drawbacks I didn't like though...but it was because I was going to use the distro as a server:

1) It has no option to go into BASH at startup. I am sure you can hack around and fix that, but found it odd there was no prompt for it.
2)Limited packages. Not a whole lot of stuff is installed, but of course the stuff that is skipped is server progs and development software. If you are doing this kinda work, I am sure you will try another distro.
3) Could not do a make! Found this a major flaw. I mean, what person uses linux but doesnt compile? You had to download and use the "development" disc. And even then, it was very difficult to add on what packages I needed using Kpackage. Just seemed like alot of work for someone that would not know linux(like myself 😛 ).

Anyway, if i was to slap this on a laptop as a desktop windows replacement to do some websurfing/Instant messaging/document writing/poke around learning tool....I would give it a thumbs up.

LordThing has it on the money, I tried it and thought very highly of it, you may have problems getting it to work on the laptop but it was easy for windows people to understand it I felt
