LX, slockets, and the new celerons

Using a slocket, can I run one of the new celerons (the .18micron ones w/ SSE and such) on a 440LX - based board (I know you can do it on BX, but I haven't actually read anything about the compatabilities with LX -- probably because nobody cares :))? A friend is looking to upgrade his old p2-266 system, and assuming it works, this seems like it would give him a pretty good increase in performance for the money...

If it would work, which I'm not sure it woudl, it would only work at 66 MHz. You'd have no overclocking options whatsoever. The voltage could be manually set on the slocket, so that shouldn't be a problem. The real question is BIOS support. Why not just throw in another $100 or so for an ABIT BF6, & get some serious OC going with the Celeron?

Overclocking isn't for everyone :)

Plus, considering the celeron/slocket would probably only cost about $100 anyway, an extra $100 is a pretty significant amount of money. Now, if you wanted to send him a check, I can get you my.. err.. his address :)

What exactly would the bios have to support? What's the difference, to it, between a P2-233 and a slocketed celeron 566, other than the mulitplier and the voltage, both of which would be handled by the slocket?

You mean besides the fact that when the board was produced the only CPUs available for it were P2's? A Celeron II is a P3 cumine derivative, & a P3 cumine is a couple step above the P2.

I really don't know if it would work, I've never seen any conclusive evidence either way. Frankly, most people wouldn't bother using an LX board anyway.
