Today marked the first day of school for my kids since we moved. We had the tour and everything this morning, it was great.

Then we find out that lunch period starts for one of my kids at about 10:30am. 10:30?! What the... sure class starts before 8:00am, but 10:30? So my kid will end up going about 3 hours between breakfast and lunch, and about 6 hours between lunch and dinner (assuming dinner at 5, which can actually be between 5 and 7 depending on what's going on any given day). Seems a bit skewed to me!

Dunno, seems kind of odd to me to start lunch that early.

Makes sense depending on how many kids are at the school. My elementary school was pretty 'crowded' so we had several lunch times in between 10:30 and 1.

My lunch hour when I was a Senior in High School was 7th period - one period before I went home. It was dumb :p

When do the kids get out? 2? It would seem like they would have to if they expect them to have lunch that early. Back in my day there was a half hour "break" between 10-10:30 and then lunch was at noon like normal people.

Yep. Welcome to school over-crowding. The lunch rooms don't have enough room for all the kids at once so they end up having more lunch periods which makes lunch start earlier.

Did you move to Huntsville, AL?

yes its stupid early

in HS we had 5 lunches and the first started at 11:15 each lunch was 30 min and there was a 15 min overlap between groups

in ele school it was 1130-12 or 12-1230, right after recess

I had lunch at 10:45 all through high school and I agree, it's stupid.

We had overlapping lunch periods that were 30 minutes each starting at 10:45am. Which was fine by me because eating breakfast at 6:30AM made me hungry by 10:30.

Well I mean it was good because I didn't even need to eat breakfast... I could just skip it and go eat lunch. However, it was stupid because by dinner time (6pm or so) I was ridiculously hungry.

Why don't you just give her a healthy snack when she gets home from school? You are supposed to eat more than 3 meals a day anyway...

Sounds like they are doing you a favor.

During my senior year in HS-2nd semester, I was able to opt out of lunch, classes started at 8 and went home at 1 where I ate lunch instead. It was awesome.

Sounds about the same as it was for me. I believe I had lunch once during the 10:30 session (I believe it was fourth period) and you could really end up hungry later in the day :p. I'm used to eating lunch around 11:15 now.

At the school my wife used to teach at they had one lunch period that started at 10am, and then 5 more staggered on top of that. I guess I was lucky that when I was in high school we had one lunch time for everyone.

How big was your high school? Probably not big at all. There were 550 kids in my graduating class alone.

From what I have seen it is NOT due to overcrowding so much as really poor building designs. I worked for a school district a few years ago and about half of the ~25 schools were that way. The enrollment was normal numbers but the lunchroom was the size of 2 or maybe 3 classrooms. There was no way to get a significant number of students in at a time.

The district is more to blame than anyone.

not shocked here, before we moved i was in a school with between 400-500 kids per grade in 9-12, we still only had 3 or 4 lunches however, and they didnt start till after 11. But SarcasticDwarf has a valid point, some lunch rooms are tiny, while the one at the bigger school i went to could seat like 1000

EDIT: i actually think you graduated more people in your HS class then i did with my college class, if not then really close

hehe
