Lunatics strike again

Just installed it on one machine, but it appears to give all the benefits of v8 optimized apps, v5.05 AP optimized app, AND cuda in one easy-to-use package. install is now a breeze, too, no cut/paste/ask rattledagger for help/etc scenarios necessary any more!

http://lunatics.kwsn.net/

The only thing to watch for: the default setting is for sse3 optimization, if you have a 65 nm c2d/q you need to click sse3x apps, if you have a newer amd clikc the amd box, and if you have a 45nm c2d/q or nehalem cpu click the sse4.1 box. Enjoy!

ps: should it be lunatics strikes again? Carl Sagan is laughing somewhere right now, no doubt. grammar is so confusing...

Thanks for the heads up Bryan 🙂, afraid I missed the last thread, sorry dajeepster 😱.

I look forwards to trying this out next time I switch back to SETI :thumbsup:

sorry, I missed it too!

we should keep this near the top for a while for those crunchers who just check in once a month.

good for all you TAS guys to use, you should get about double normal credit if you use the optimized apps. Also, it's not a cheat, these optimized apps actually use your computer that much more efficiently!

Started a rig today with optimized apps.

thx for the info!:beer:

a gaunleteer is a person who, um, gauntlets. for some reason when you add the "eer" at the end you have to remove the first "t". or something.

yeah, um, that could be it, too.

bump for you gauntlet-types who are just installing seti. as mentioned before, these are not cheats, they just make better use of your computer. Eric Korpela himself actually helped write some of this code. If you have an older computer or a "mostly" stable OC then stay away from these, however, as they put more stress on your system than vanilla seti (think more like F@H-type stress).

How do I know that I am using the optimized app?

Task Manager shows "AK_v8b_win_x64_SSE41.exe" - is this it and is it the right one for an i7 920 w/Win7 64 bit?

Also, some computers are finishing WUs an order of magnitude faster than mine (8 min. vs 66 min) - Are the exact same WUs crunched on GPU as on CPU?

Use the Unified installer, and choose the one for your win64 platform..

It's an executable. Once it's running the install, it will become clear which one to choose.

let me know if this helps.

and there are different work units for the gpu and cpu... the ones for the gpu will have "6.08 (cuda)" at the end of them in the manager as apposed to 6.03 or 5.28

if you got one of the older optimizers, it didn't differentiate between the two.

Yes, you're fine. For everyone who has questions, you're using the correct optimized apps if task mgr shows ap_5.05r168_sse3.exe*32 or AK_v8b_win_x64_SSE41.exe. I think that there's a different one for cuda, but I don't like to thrash my gpus so I typically don't use them. There are a few other variants depending on what you checked when you first installed the optimized apps, but you know that you're running them if any reference to sse is in the .exe file. Vanilla seti doesn't take advantage of any sse instructions, that's why these optimized apps work so well.

I know it's crazy, it used to be an ordeal to install them. Now it really is as easy as clicking a few buttons and you're on. Just make sure to use your version of sse (4.1 for 45nm intel cpus, ssse3 for 65 nm core 2 cpus, sse3 for most others) and the latest Astropulse version and you're gtg.

Yes, that through me for a loop too: Here's a WU that I crunched on my GPU and my "wingman" crunched on his CPU. You have to click on the "task ID" for both to figure it out.
link

wingman:

<core_client_version>6.6.36</core_client_version>
<![CDATA[
<stderr_txt>
setiathome_enhanced 6.02 DevC++/MinGW
libboinc: 6.3.6

vs

my GPU:

<core_client_version>6.10.0</core_client_version>
<![CDATA[
<stderr_txt>
setiathome_CUDA: Found 1 CUDA device(s):
Device 1 : GeForce 9800 GTX/9800 GTX+

Also, boinc doesn't report the "run time" for GPUs accurately (87.22 (reported) vs ~720 sec (actual))

gpu work units typically go a LOT faster. I might get 6-8 minutes for a gpu wu, an hour for a normal wu, and 8 hours for an AP wu for comparison.

After my main rig's PSU died & nearly burnt out Thursday :Q, I've finally switched back to SETI & using this app 🙂.

Did I want to leave multibeam ticked???

Also BOINC has only grabbed enough WUs for each core to run now & has ignored my main preferencs, wth??

there have been intermittent wu shortages for the past 10 days or so, consider yourself lucky that you got any at all. my q9450 wasn't connected to the internet fora few days, when I reconnected I sent in about 60 wu's and got...0 back. they should have everything fixed in a few days.

Multibeam box should be checked.

Ah ok thanks Bryan 🙂.

My rig had run dry but it's just been able to grab some more WUs, however it's again only got 4 WUs 🙁.
That's odd, when I hit the 'update' button 1 of the messeges BIONC says is 'not reporting or requesting tasks'. My WU Q is 4 days so it should asking for tons of WUs even if it can't get them, any idea what that's about??

under advanced/preferences/network usage/ you have it set up to keep 4 day's worth of work in the queue, right? It will sometimes not request extra work for the first couple of cycles until it figures out how fast your computer is. if you're reporting a lot of work then it will start to figure out what constitutes 4days' worth and eventually load up your queue. I just downloaded a bunch of wu's without issue.

Yep you got it 🙂, 'additional work buffer' is what I'd missed, annoying thing is I knew I'd changed something in thier last time I'd run it!

The wu's is exactly the same, but when server assigns work to you, it get assigned to be "run by cuda-app-version 6.08 " or "run by cpu-app-version 6.03", depending on what type of work user asked for (cuda or cpu).

Atleast as long as wu hasn't started running, it's no problem to stop BOINC, and manually switch any wu between cuda and cpu-app. Due to VLAR-wu's being really slow on CUDA, there's actually a tool what does just this, and re-assigns any VLAR-CUDA to be run by cpu-app instead.

As for optimized apps... hmm:
1: Fastest computer was completely up-to-date, nothing to change. 😎
2: Next computer, SETI_Enhanced up-to-date, but older v5.03-Astropulse. Since there aren't any v5.03-Astropulse-wu's any longer, upgraded.
3: Last computer gave me a surprise, since even it's running 64-bit windows, apparently the seti-app is 32-bit. But, after taking a closer look on Lunatics, the reason for 32-bit-only is explained, since apparently there aren't any 64-bit SSE2-apps at all. 🙁 Also, it doesn't contain astropulse, and decided to not install it now either.

So, all computers is ready for the race as far as optimizations goes. :beer:
