Compgeeks $89 PA-2

Definetly just barely warm but I'm entering this because I am a VERY satisfied PA-1 users.

Very small/light MP3 player, I actually wear it on my watch when I'm wearing my light weight running shorts.

Only diff I can see on the PA-2 (vs the PA-1) is that it uses a single memory slot so if you buy another MMC card you can get 128mb on it.

OK that's not incredafantastic by todays standards...

64mb MMC card sells for $40

Does this require software to add songs on, or no?

If not, then a good deal. If so, then I would personally never get one.

Have no idea what you are talking about?

Software to add songs on?

It comes with software, I think it is just windows media player with a IPAQ plug in.

I use music match jukebox or something.

This MP3 player is great if you need something RUN with.

It's so small and light weight that I wear it on my watch.

If you are just looking for something for the Bus you could spend your money a lot more wisely.

I have the Compaq PA-1. And yes, it definitely requires special software to load songs onto it. I don't know what the PA-2 comes with, but mine came with some really poor RioPort software for downloading MP3's to the player via the included USB cable. (The RioPort software also rips CD's, but only on a trial basis.)

However, there is a plug-in for MusicMatch software available from the MusicMatch site. I still had to install the RioPort software and drivers, but the plug-in allows me to use MusicMatch to transfer MP3's to the PA-1, so that's what I use.

I did try both reading the MMC's in my USB card reader as well as file-copying MP3's from my hard disk to the MMC. That didn't work for me; my guess is that the files are stored in some non-standard format on the MMC.

Remember, this is all for the PA-1. YMMV for the PA-2!

Just did a search and came up with a few cheap PA-1s stripped of their memory and a reasonably priced NIB PA-1 for $56 with 15 hours left to bid.

This is the new PA-2 wich can be upgraded to a 128MB player for $40. To do the same with a PA-1 would cost you $80 so go ahead and save a few bucks if you are never going to do an upgrade.

While I really liked the PA-1 and have beat the heck out of it over the last 1.5 years or so, if I was buying a player today I would probably go with the new Rio s35s. Looks like a similar size but has an FM radio build in and can handle 256mb............

In deference to the cheap ebay prices for the PA-1 I've downgraded the deal from warm to luke warm.....
