Luggage recommendations

Whatever is cheap and not too crappily built at the thrift store. Luggage is definitely on the "always buy used" list. Garage sales are also a good source of cheap luggage.

The below might just come in handy! 😉

How Do You Check for Bed Bugs in Luggage?

The flannel sheets I snagged recently are great.... get back to me in 7-8 years for a final word on "quality" though! I wasn't aware they made baggage?

😉
well, yes - duffle bags, backpacks, wheeled luggage. I've got solid usage from a E.B. backpack and also a duffle bag. Plus my nylon windbreaker jacket has been faithful, yet after 18 years or so it needed a new zipper and fresh elastic in the cuffs. So my mother did the needful. Still wear it. Kind of oversized so I can fit sweaters underneath.
Come to think of it, I also have a faux fur throw blanket from E.B. . . . but it's been mostly stored so . . . no comment . . . other than "it doesn't shed."

I have a bunch of delsey bags that have held up decently, both hard and soft bags. I would never pay full price on them but I've gotten my money's worth. Tumi and travelpro are the top dogs but luggage gets so beat up anyways I'd never spend that money on it.

I have an Away carry on and love it. Some of the people I know that travel a shit-ton use that brand as well.
I have one for shorter trips, and it's okay. I think I'm not a huge fan of hard-sided cases, but it's pretty decent overall; nice that it is also officially carry-on size. I find it's a good size for 3-5 day trips, or a short trip where I need a suit (so I use a portable suiter thing I have from an older suitcase). I also have a TravelPro Platinum Elite 21" spinner bag. It's also technically carry-on sized, at least domestically. It's a little larger than the Away, but it's soft-sided and better for trips in the 5-7 day range, or if I was to go international and want space to carry some extra stuff back.

Before the TravelPro, I had a Samsonite Silhouette 21" spinner - that was my primary bag from 2007 through the end of 2021. I would have kept using it, but the handle was falling apart, and it was showing its age in a few other spots. The handle was the big part though: it wasn't really easy to find the specific part since Samsonite has 100000 generations of the Silhouette, so it was time to retire the bag.

If someone ever makes a suitcase that is:
  • hard-sided (to protect your items),
  • carry-on size (because I don't like paying $30 - $50 just to have to wait at the luggage carousal for 30 minutes after a red-eye flight),
  • without 360° wheels (ever notice how they take up 20% of your allowable space often with empty space between the wheels)
  • and a soft pocket on the outside (so that you don't have to open your hard sided-case and have everything fly about the room just to get your airline ticket)
  • not tacky (cause eww)
  • not black (because I want to be able to spot my luggage in an instant)
then I would personally buy every one of those ever made.

Until then, I just get the cheapest carry-on that I can find.

Just make sure it has a high security lock that has 5 digits instead of 4. That way you can set it to 12345 instead of just 1234.

I have the soft sided away expandable carry on. Got it just over a year ago. Not sure if they still make it
