Sure, there are a few majors that are seeing slight declines in starting salaries compared with last year. Namely, the starting salary for computer engineering jobs is down 2 percent; and the starting pay for information science jobs is down 0.8 percent.

But many have seen significant increases. Aerospace and aeronautical engineering majors, for instance, are enjoying a 9 percent increase in starting salaries; marketing majors have seen a 6 percent increase in starting salaries; while economics and finance majors are getting paid 5.1 percent more than last year.

Meanwhile, chemical, mechanical and civil engineers are also seeing paychecks that are at least 4 percent higher.

Even liberal arts grads as a group ? those notoriously low-paid first-timers in the workforce ? are enjoying a bump in pay of 4.2 percent, albeit to what is still one of the lowest starting salaries out there -- $30,337.

Very nice starting salaries for many careers.

Is there an exhaustive list? I'd like to see some other engineerings, namely Biomedical Engineeronh ;)

Bah, those fools need to learn some math if they want to be considered real enginerds. :p

Wow. The highest on the list is chemical engineering at $55,256 starting! If your not planning on staying in school beyond this, sterilize yourself now while you still can!

Maybe my kids not having a chance at an eduction really isn't such a big deal afterall! It won't get them above the new poverty line, so who cares!

you chemE?

most drugs will be biological molecules in the near future, they are already starting to show up in the testing channels, you chemE majors have to figure out how to mass produce them, i tip my hat to you (i'm biochem)

they should almost require biochem classes in students graduating with chem degrees (small molecules will only go so far), to many chemists rely on combinatorial chemistry to solve problems, instead of going after it from a structure/function perspective as biochemists in acadamia have, not to mension a lot of that stuff is now automated and doesn't require human hands

Bwahahaha we dont take math? I take every single math class that every single Engineer is required to take...which basically means all lower division math ;) And have you seen professors work on stuff like Biomechanics? Using Mathematical models for the body...that stuff gets ridicouslouyl insane and complex because its its always higher ordered diff eqs ;) On top of it stuff like MEMS doesn't even really need the body, its just insane amounts of physics with basic electrical engineering knowledge ;) If you are talking about tissue engineering or cellular engineering I maybe more inclined to agree with you on that, but only to a degree. Give it more time and when we understand things more you'll see mathematical models applied to that as well~

Soo...math what? ;)

Oh yeah. Its one thing to synthesize a molecule, and its a totally another thing to mass produce it, although the latter doesn't seem to get as much attention as the former. I worked in a lab for a while (Before I quit because I wanted to see if my grades would go and my my my they did ;) ) and the Professor there actually synthesized morphine and he got all the credit for it...but in the end its the ChemEs that scaled it up.

ChemE is a great major to pick in anyways, you have a LOT of flexiblity...I was going to do it but at the last second I bailed for Biomedical Engineering and am thoroughly happy with it so far ;)

But I definitely agree on the part that medicine will shift to biological molecules. I actually think that the only real effective means to stop cancer will have to be a molecular strategy custom tailored to each person because something like cancer is soo general that its the only real way...too bad it'll probably cost prohibitive to where only the rich can afford it...

Gosh, i feel like such a nerd talking about this stuff because it excites me to no end ;)

edit:
I just felt like pointing out i think i have an unhealth obsession with the ;)

Don't plan on marriage, and especially kids, unless you plan on making a bare minimum salary of $80,000. Sterilize now, dead serious.

How about you sterilize yourself instead?

My parents make about 40k each and they had 3 kids, and do alright.

My mom raised me, paid off a house, three cars, and numerous other expenses, including full health, auto, and related insurance, on $60k a year.

And what a lovely thoughtful young man you've grown up to be. :p

Exactly my point. Thats not possible anymore. Reproduction, putting kids through college, and retirement are now strictly a priviledge of the rich.

Alright, took me a second but now I know you aren't serious. But what's your point?

id say parents need to be more prepared to make the required sacrifices to do those things if they arent rich. money is very low on the list of tools it takes to raise a successful child.

edit: good news starting salaries are going up. it would be nice to see those compared to cost of living to see the true increase, tho.

This was like five years ago, I'm 21. I put myself through college largely on my own dime.
