I got my new $25 Lucent Winmodem today. Installed it and loaded the drivers that came with it (v5.48). Made my first connection to the Internet and, voila! 36K!!! :D:D This may not sound like much, but I usually connected at 31.2K with my old Rockwell winmodem.

So, first thing I do is download new drivers (v5.75). I get them installed, connect and.... what? 28.8K???? :( I try several times. Every time was the same 28.8. So I remove those and go back to the v5.48 and bingo! We're back to 36K. Anybody know what's up??

Also, any tweaks to go along with this modem are definitely welcome! Thanks.

A good place to start might be modemhelp. You can also enable the log in Advanced Settings and maybe get some idea whats going on.

Ahh another follower:) The 5.75 is crap. Try the 5.70. I gotta get rid of these 5.84's they made my connections horrible. No wonder lucent never released them. BTW try some gaming and you may be suprised that the pings will be better than your old modem at the same connect speed.

Yeah, I was pinging under 200 while playing UT. :D

I'll try the 5.70's

I tried several init strings, but I would connect at 40k, but test at 27K (www.msn.com speed test).

The drivers will have some effect on your connection speed (like you saw), but a lot of it has to do with your phone lines. Static, spikes, and interferance will really drop your connection speed.

I have a US Robotics 56k ISA hardware modem, and love it to death, but if I were to purchase any WinModem I wouldn't think twice: LT WinModems rock. I use Linux, so having my USR hardware modem is a necessity for me. And my phone lines are about as clear as you can get - I play on a Quake 3 server about 3-4 hops away [ISP's upstream provider], and ping 110ms in the "Multiplayer" display window, and average about 130-145ms on the server.

:)

Update those drivers often.. ;)

LOL GT, I got my Lucent Winmodem working under linux tonight dialing up to my school. They released a binary for their PCI modems, and it worked great. Only problem is you have to use an earlier kernel, like 2.2.12, 13, 14. Anything higher and it craps out.

GT, those are completely awesome ingame ping times. The lowest ping I've seen on 56k modems is 80ms which was on this 56k internal ISA DSP 3com modem, using a free ISP (so far none of the pay ISPs have had better ping).

I usually have horrible ping while playing UT though. :|
