I have a Genius GM56PCI-L modem with a Lucent chipset. I've installed the latest drivers and the modem dials, connects then disconnects. I've tried the Lucent generic drivers and tried some changes in the setup as well as some init strings to expand the error duration but it still disconnects after about 5 secs online. Also tried another ISP. Anyone know what would cause this?

Check for line noise.. line noise can cause any modem to disconnect unexpectedly. And check that you dont have hang up after checking in your email.

Outlook isn't running when this happens. The dialup connection is all that is running. I'm going to change modems and see if that helps. Line noise is fine and about 20 different modems have been on this line before. I'll post the results of the replacement.

Well I think I found the problem. Whom ever set up the system intially hadn't installed a TCP/IP device in Network Settings. Once that was done it has been online for about ten minutes now and no disconnects. Thanks and if someone else runs across this I hope my misery has helped.

Doesn't seem right, I'm sorry to say. DialUp Networking has it's own TCP/IP "stack" (the different programs/protocols that make up what we know as TCP/IP) and does not require the Network icon TCP/IP protocol to be bound there. I'm more inclined to think that your phone lines cleared up.

However, if your system is working, that's a good thing.
