Force being Unleashed on Wii next spring
Following months of rumors, LucasArts confirms its first game featuring Wii Remote-enabled lightsaber combat.

After using the Wii Remote as a virtual sword in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, many gamers had one question on their minds: "When can I use this thing as a lightsaber?" Today, LucasArts had an answer: Spring 2008, when the publisher of all things Star Wars will release its first game for Nintendo's wildly popular console.

Contrary to some rumors, the game in question will not be an all-new title; rather, it will be a port of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, also due for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, Nintendo DS, and Xbox 360. Unlike its siblings, the Wii edition will have an emphasis on lightsaber combat via an exclusive duel mode. The mode will allow two players to face off in head-to-head matches using Wii Remotes as if they were the energy blades favored by the Jedi Knights.

The Wii edition of The Force Unleashed is being developed by Australia-based Krome Studios (Viva Piñata: Party Animals; The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night). All versions of the game will put players in the shoes of an as-yet-unnamed Force-adept character toiling secretly under the auspices of none other than Darth Vader to seek out and destroy the Jedi stragglers who could threaten the Empire's power.

The Force Unleashed made an impression at the 2006 Electronic Entertainment Expo with its cutting-edge graphics, physics, and artificial intelligence, which are powered by Pixelux's Digital Molecular Matter and NaturalMotion's Euphoria middleware. GameSpot's previous coverage has more details on the game and its groundbreaking technology.

Boo... I won't pretend to know much about Krome Studios, but my hope died a little when their two highlights are games that sound like shovelware.

Good luck, Krome.

I have a 360 and my roommate has a wii.... it'll be fun to go from good graphics to interesting control implementation

I see a lot of Wii control mods. Adding a long blade and such. I also see a lot of wii controllers crashing into each other. 🙂 Sounds like fun tho.

Not to sound too pessimistic here but there are several things that don't sound that great.

A. The game sounds like a port, not specifically designed from the ground up exclusively for the Wii.
B. The wii-light saber sounds like it is tacked-on and not even the primary focus of the game (more of a mini game add on)
C. The article references Zelda, which does not have true sword simulation (swing the wiimote in any way or direction but Link only swings his sword in one direction unless you use the control stick like every past 3D Zelda game - the wiimote was a glorified button), perhaps the same could be true for this StarWars game...

I really don't think I could get too excited until there really is a game (similar to a Jedi Knight type of game) developed specifically in mind for the Wii where a large focus of the game is actually using the motion sensing capabilities of the wiimote to actually simulate lightsaber movements to help you complete missions throughout a StarWars based story line.

I think it depends on the size of your television. On a 4:3 27", the Wii probably looks very good, but on a 61" 16:9, it looks so-so. After all, the Wii is only SD (480).

EDIT: Back to the topic, I'm excited to hear a Wii version being released. I remember being disappointed when the game was announced and it was said that a Wii version would not be made.
