I was trouble-shooting an electrical problem on a five-year-old Japanese van today, when I found a defective relay.....Lucas, made in England. Haven't any idea how it got into this van, but I remember this Lucas company well, and not too fondly.

When I owned British cars and motorcycles some years ago, I got to know Lucas pretty good. They were famous for defective electrical parts....coils, starters, generators, points, bulbs, etc. In fact they were so bad, Lucas jokes were common. "Why do the British drink their beer warm? Because they have Lucas Refridgerators."

Is this company still in business? If so, why?

Spookus, Lucas!

Rant over.

Heh. As a restorer of old Brit bikes I would have to say Mr. Lucas = 666

They don't call him the Prince of Darkness for nothing.

Lucas-Girling was actually highly diverse. Girling made the smog-pump in my '76 914, and Girling brakes were used in the original Shelby Cobra.

Interesting tidbit: Lucas became TRW, which has now been acquired by Northrop Grumman.

Ha, you think you have something to worry about? I was checking around my engine compartment the other day and found a bright yellow "Lucas" sticker on the hydraulic brake accumulator for my brakes! How's that for instilling confidence? Oh yeah, and that's in a '92 Audi 100!!!

Actually, Lucas-Girling made very good brakes. Girling (a subsidiary of Lucas) made the brakes used on the original Shelby Cobras.

EDIT: Porsche used Lucas-Girling brake parts in a lot of its older cars.
