Lubricating My Case Fans

my 3 case fans are sounding like they could use some grease so am I correct on this procedure?

1)remove sticker

2)Drop in 2 drops of sewing machine oil or the like

3)replace sticker

4)spin fanblades once with fingers to spread oil around

also if it matters they are all ball bearing fans

I've been doin that for a couple of years now and it makes a difference. Amazing how some fans are shipped bone dry. I do the same thing on cpu fans aswell...

Only thing I would add is make sure that the sticker is on real well or use a round color Avery lable from your stationary store. Also, if you can, power the fan(s) up away from the MB first; in case some excess oil were to splash out. I usually hook them up sitting next to the case with a piece of cardboard held between them and the interior of the system. Just let them spin for 30 seconds or so. If there is a problem it will show up by then. And yes, this is a good thing to do and can save a lot of $$ in the long run on replacement fans.

You got it right on, but personally, I feel a teflon lube is the best for berrings...such as Tri-flo. Works like WD-40 but better.

the fan on my northbridge stopped spinning completely after about 8 months. the only oil i had laying around was from a really old bottle of baby oil that hadn't been touched in several years.....needless to say it worked like a charm.

Just so everyone knows WD-40 is a solvent based lube. It's for rusty bolts on the old Chev, not computers.
It likes to eat plastic and rubber parts.

thanks fireman, that answered my question. thanks Cruze8 my mbo fan for teh chip has been whining and i didn tknow how to fix it
