LTTP: ME2 question...how important are loyalty missions?

I've been playing for a week and I have all 9 party members, and all but 3 have what are probably loyalty missions. The game really wants me to go though the portal to the enemies homeworld, but I'm thinking I should grind through the loyalty missions to finish them off. I only use Jack, Grunt or Samara in my squad, so I dont think I need to worry about the others. I wouldnt mind doing them later when I've finished the main story. I just dont want to have the less loyal squad members die or something because of it. I never played ME1 so I dont know what the repercussions are. I've been taking the good (paragon?) path so any one them dying would be devastating to my Shepard. hahaha

They are important, and fun to boot. Why not do them all?

That's all I'll say without spoiling the game for you.

Thanks, thats what I figured. I wasn't going to skip them but I talked to Man and that sent to the ship, which wasnt optional, and after that mission the game wanted to send me through the omega gate. I opted out of that, but it seemed like the loyalty building stuff was now optional, and the main story was more important. The only RPGs I played were GTA and SR, where nothing has any impact of any importance.

Not really a spoiler: how quickly you enter the omega relay after the option is made available (basically, immediately vs. doing any other missions at all) will affect the results of that mission in a way that might be important to some players. If you are playing a paragon and want to achieve the "perfect" ending, you might want to re-load to before you enter the derelict ship and do anything you want to do (loyalty missions, etc) before you begin that mission.

I did enter the derelict ship, and after the elusive man told me to get the IFF so I could go through the Omega relay, but instead of continuing I put it off and am finishing off the loyalty missions. So I finished the derelict ship, but did not get the IFF. So is that past the point of no return for the perfect ending?

Regardless, I think I'm going to play a second time as a renegade Infiltrator, so I'll just continue as is. It would be nice to know though. I'm not a perfect paragon engineer now, as some of the quicktime mouse events looked to be evil after the fact and I did things I didnt want to do like toss a guy out the window or shoot a baddie that I could have let go.
Like I had loyalty with Miranda, and after I did Jack's loyalty mission they got into a fight and I had to choose between them. I chose Jack since I just did her loyalty mission and it looks like I lost Miranda's loyalty. Is there no getting Miranda's loyalty back? If I have to chose, I'd still take Jack because I use her all the time on missions, but I dont like the fact that I had to choose.
So I'm no angel. I already restarted from scratch like 3 times switching classes and genders, etc, so I'll just finish this playthrough.

But more importantly, my lesbian Shepard is frisky, and I've started down the path with Kelly and I want to know how long she's gonna hold out! I've even installed Fraps to record it, but I haven't had one of those conversations since we had dinner. Whats the deal? :p

I tried but I don't think it's possible to make her hook up with a chick

You're still ok Childs. You'll know when you've gone too far without doing all the loyalty missions. Something...dramatic happens.

And don't hold your breath for Kelly. You can see something there, but only after you've finished the game and continue to play the save game.

Cool, then I guess I can stop recording every conversation I have with her. I must have 20 of them where I'm ask to talk, scan the options, then just say goodbye.

Huh. Didn't think you could finish the mission without grabbing the IFF. Maybe I wasn't paying attention during the dialogues. Obtaining the IFF triggers the "point of no return" for the optimal ending.

As I recall if your paragon rating is high enough you don't have to pick between Jack and Miranda. That's what I did, anyway. I've heard that once you do pick it's not possible to get the loyalty of the person you didn't pick back. Not sure about that though.

But more importantly, my lesbian Shepard is frisky, and I've started down the path with Kelly and I want to know how long she's gonna hold out!

Gotta say, I was sorta disappointed by the quality of the POST-ending make out sessions. I'm pretty sure that's all you get from Kelly, but can't verify for certain.

Not to derail the thread.. but this is somewhat on topic. Anyone else feel that ME2 (storyline wise) had WAY too much "building the party" and WAY too little "actually getting something done." I felt like 80% of the game was just recruiting people, 10% were those worthless 2 minute anomaly missions, and then 10% was actual overall story arc play. I really felt let down by how little story arc gameplay appeared in this game. Is it just me? Maybe ME1 was like this and I just don't remember, but I don't think so.

i only have 2 loyalty missions left - zaed and jack. i didn't really like either of those chars, so i'm not sure if i'll do their missions.

who did you use for your party? i use grunt and thane. god thane is a badass. i was very disappointed that legion has crap powers, despite being able to build him a (presumably) kickass sniper rifle.

vrolok - IIRC, ME2 was designed so that building the party was one of the more important parts to the game. i'm not sure how much i have left.. i'm guessing not too much based on your #'s

Yeah, I suppose I just didn't appreciate the plot goals of ME2. I can understand the direction they took, but for some reason it didn't have the same epic/cinematic feel that ME1 had for me. Now maybe it's just because they're going to do less party stuff with ME3 and put more story arc in as a wrap up of the trilogy, who knows. It was still a good game, just not entirely what I expected. However, it might honestly be more replayable this way, as I can simply ignore the party members I don't want to use on a certain playthough and just hammer through the main storyline fairly quickly - that might actually be kinda nice.

Zaeed has a wicked loyalty mission (and he's a badass character imo - Joker even says "Zaeed's like you - he just takes paychecks" :D). You will appreciate it especially at the later part of the game, when you already have an understanding of the current "world".

I wouldn't touch Jack with a 10 ft pole so I wasn't really that impressed with her mission.

I enjoyed ME2's multi-layered approach to story telling. The loyalty missions provide the backstory for your team, and better flesh out their motivations for following Shepard.

I loved the building the party aspect, although I hate getting to only use three members at once.Thane is badass but he was my least used character - I just couldn't find a use for him.

Aside from building the party, the game was way too short.

Not correct.
It's really hard to get your paragon/renegade high enough to change the "loser"'s mind though. Respeccing to the max convo bonus skill may help.

Mind you,
Miranda is a lot harder to kill in the endgame, so if you want them all to survive you should just pick Jack
.

Samara and Miranda make the game almost too easy even at the higher difficulties. If you like microing party powers, anyway.

I played the highest difficulty available on debut and used Mir/Sam because I liked them .. it was cake. Felt like playing on easy. Starting Insanity now.

It does feel like a lot of friendship building, but I'm new to RPGs. I only have two left...well, maybe three if you count the DLC guy, and I think I am at 19 hours. I have been doing a lot of scanning to level up everything, as I dont know what resources are available on the other side of the Omega relay. If it is unknown enemy territory, I doubt you can buy things at the local 7-11. It would be disappointing if I went into the relay and 2 hours later the game was over.

Now if you can take your crew into ME3, then that might not be so bad. But if you have to recruit a new crew in ME3, well, that would just suck.

Quoted for posterity. I'll be checking this thread later. :p
