LSI's Megaraid Power Console Plus HELP!!

Need help using their power console...

Here is my situation.

I have 3x750GB drives in Raid 5 currently on my MegaRaid 300x8 PCI-X SATA card.

I would like to add a 4th (and eventually 5th) drive to the ARRAY. I see I can add a drive to the LOGICAL drive - this however is not what I want to do (nor will it allow me to do this)

How do i add the 4th drive to the array so that it still is included in the raid 5 parity - but as a new logical drive? If you could contact me via pm or aim or something for help I'd appreciate it very much!!

While I don't know that particular card, I've worked with a number of other RAID controllers.

Many controllers use the term array and logical drive interchangeably. If I understand what you want to do correctly, you want to add a 4th disk to your RAID 5 array and separate that into 2 logical disks to be presented to the OS.

You can achieve the same result through partitioning. I don't think there is any real benefit (other than manageability) to separate the RAID array into logical disks, and with partitioning you can achieve a fairly similar result.

Another possibility, you might see the controller automatically create 2 logical disks when you create an array greater than 2TB. A lot of operating systems still struggle with that limit and require special configurations for it, so I've seen some controllers automatically separate >2TB arrays into smaller LUNs.

Maybe someone else can offer some specifics for your card.
