Ive got a 2.8c with a p4c800-e deluxe, and im trying to install an LSI21320 scsi adapter, that works great in other systems, but is not with this board. Ive narrowed it down to a conflict between the LSI and usb. When usb is enabled, no matter how many, I get a message that says "00 USB mass storage device found and configured" and it wont let me into bios. When usb is disabled, I get no message, but still can't get into bios and the system stops booting after showing the ide devices.

My bios version is 1010, ive tried the card in different pci slots..

I should also say that I got this scsi adapter from dell, but it works flawless in every other system ive tried it in, and works just like a stock adapter should.

Im going to sleep now, but I'll check this thread in the morning, please help =\

That'll be a (familiar sounding) screwup of the main BIOS whilst the SCSI BIOS is attempting to register itself and the devices it found. Ask your mainboard maker.
A SCSI BIOS update, conducted in the other system, might also help - www.lsilogic.com

Thanks for the ideas, ive tried out all the other slots, and i sent out an email to asus tech support, waiting on that, im going to try the bios now...the only thing holding me back is that it comes from dell...but im assuming that the card architecture is the same, but dell just paid to have their bios put on...The model that dell put the card out as is an LSI21320-IS, and then there are the ones that lsi has out, LSI21320 and LSI21320-R, hopefully i can find a bios that will do the trick.

From what I've heard about Dell-ified Adaptec cards, it's not always safe to flash to a stock BIOS.

Dohh thats no good, because i think a bios flash might do the trick...When I hop into the cards bios in another computer, It shows irq, and I think normally you can change that, but in the dell bios, its disabled. So I went to lsi logic, and read about the bios, and they give you the option to change the irq (maybe dells bios disables this, to save some tech support calls?)

Now because the card is conflicting with usb (atleast i think), and this board has 8 usb ports, im thinking that the irq might be causing the error message about a usb mass storage device when I have usb enabled, but when its disabled, it just hangs...

So now im thinking, flash the scsi adapters bios, be able to change the irq, and all will be ok? What are some of your opinions? Do you think its worth a try to flash the bios? Could an irq conflict be causing this? I haven't had a conflict like this in ages, I thought they were a thing of the past, resting in peace with 486's and pentiums..

***EDIT*** Actually, im not sure about this irq changing, because it is assigned by the system bios.

****EDIT**** All of the LSI21320 adapters use the same bios...this is leaning me towards yes it would be ok to flash and use this bios, ill go read more

Yes, about the only LSI customers who used their own BIOS were Tekram, and even they stopped doing that with their U160 series. LSI's reference BIOS is excellent enough, and by LSI's concept of how the BIOS adapts to a certain card design, absolutely generic as long as the card makers stuck to the basic rules. Now if it's a genuine LSI _card_ anyway, there should be no fear.

It's probably a good idea to save the original BIOS to disk before upgrading. LSI's flash utility lets you do so.

Oh, and leave the IRQs alone! IRQ conflicts are sort of an urban myth. Besides, the LSI SCSI BIOS just shows the resources assigned by system BIOS. This of course is not adjustable from there; it is the core system BIOS's task to detect devices and sort out the resource requests.

What might have happened is that the system BIOS forgot to assign the SCSI chip an IRQ. Put EVERYTHING in the board's own BIOS back to factory defaults, and if still no go, set "PnP OS Installed" to "No". Do _not_ screw around with any other PCI, PnP, or shadowing related setting.

I really appriciate your help Peter, ive read some of your other threads, you are a great help...Here is how things ended up...

I downloaded the bios and was going to flash my card, and then i got an error when i tried to do so that said it couldn't find my pci bus!? wth? Anyways, by this time i got so fed up, i thought about returning the board, but i do like all it has to offer, so i called my friend with an adaptec card, asked if i could use it to see if it works. It turned out to work in my system, and my lsi works in his, so were just going to swap adapters. Im just going to leave this alone, and if something comes up in the future when my friend upgrades, then i will see what i can do about flashing again...The way i tried was with the program included with the bios. But oh well, i worked something out and thats all that matters, thanks again

Generally, LSI cards are much less troublesome in compatibility problems than Adaptec's are. Then again, ASUS is in bed with Adaptec, so go figure ...
