lowering heatsink fan speed?

is there a way to lower the fan speed of my heatsink? I have a really fast and loud heatsink fan, and would like to lower the speed if possible so it's not so darn loud! I have and ASUS A7A mobo. Thanks!

Cut the red wire and splice the 5V line onto it. This will make the fan run at 7V, as opposed to the normal 12V, thereby lowering the speed. Only thing is some fans wont start up on 7V, so you should test it before you power on the comp. Alternatively, you can purchase a rheostat and splice that on to the wire. That will allow you to manually adjust the fan rpm via a thumbwheel of some sort.

Or you can solder a resistor onto the 12v line. I did that on mine, and it keeps things nice and cool and quiet.

Quiet computers: Reducing fan Noise in your PC:
  • "...I quieted the fans in my system by simply cutting the power wire and splicing in an appropriately-valued resistor, usually in the range of 30 to 150 ohms (note that normal 1/4 watt resistors won't cut it - you'll probably need resistors rated for at least 1 watt. See below to calculate exactly the minimum that'll work)..."
