Lowering CPU Temp???

Is there anyway to effectivley lower the temperature of the CPU other than getting a more expensive heatsink/fan combo?

I'm running Duron 700@900mhz as of now and I was hoping to find a way to lower it's temp (It's at 100* when it's idle). The only fans in my case are 2 80mm that came with the Antec SX830 and the 300w powersupply fan. But, do case fans even effect the CPU temperature? They would only lower the overall case temperature, correct??? If so, what is there that I can do to bring down my processor's temp other than a better heatsink/fan?

Thanks,
Derek Heimlich

You could lower the idle temps of your cpu using a software cooler ,which partially shuts the cpu when idling.Naturally when the cpu is under full load the cooler won't bw working.
I'm afraid I can't remember the one that works for the Duron.

But, do case fans even effect the CPU temperature? They would only lower the overall case temperature, correct???
1,Yes ,2.no! ;)

Don't forget that the cpu fan will be drawing its air from the case air around it ,so lowering the case temps will also lower the cpu temps.
BTW where are your 2 case fans & which direction are they blowing air?(incl PSU fan)

I open up the CPU case lid, and the result is beyond my expectation.
Since i live in Asia, hot temp is always the problem. Before i open up the case, the idle temp won't leave 45C, but after i open up the case, the idle temp is always under 35C, the full load temp also decrease, never touch 53C again like before. Well...10C margin is quite a drop, and it's free :D
Now, i have new problem... the dust

My Spec was :
Duron 600@850 (heater)
V3 3000 (another heater)

Use Globalwin FOP32, 2 case fan (in & out), 1 slot fan (out)
After i open up the case lid, i think the case fans can be ignored

Qzruh,

But that's with an OPen case. With a closed case, case fans definately have an impact on cpu temp.

Yes Mike, i said 'after i open up the case'... then they can be ignored.
With the case closed, of course the have an impact to the CPU temp, but in my situation they gave only a little help on cooling my CPU temp, so i opened the case to give more airflow

Didn't even realize that. Thanks for the info.

One of my case fans is located in the front down the bottom and is pulling air into the case, while the other is right beneath the powersupply pushing it out. The PS fan is also blowing air out of the case. I'm glad you brought this up, I had wanted to ask this too but forgot. What is the best position for these?

Thanks,
Derek

Yeah but don't go cheap on your AMD HS/fans - they require a lot more cooling power than P3s. I have the Taisol and FIOP38 bothe of which beat off the cheaper but effective Chrome Orb.

Try lowering your Vcore and see if it will run stable. I can run my duron 600 all the way up to 900 MHz @1.6 any higher than 900 MHZ I have to raise all the way to 1.8

I dropped my CPU temp 4c just by taming the rat's nest of wires in my case. IDE cables should be rounded. Extra power cables should be ran out of the way (Enermax includes many, many power connectors, but i don't need them right now and they take up alot of room in a midtower case). Inside an extra 5 1/4 drive bay works or you can run them behind the 3 1/2 drive cage. You'll need those little zip ties that you should be able to buy at any har ware store. They're labeled "cable ties," buy the 4 inchers and tie off everything to free up air flow.

My ole 333 k-6 2 with 384ram pc was running just fine.
I added a second hard drive and I couldn't believe the extra temp. The newer drive in the upper bay seemed to actually be a bit warm to the touch than I felt comfortable with.

So I took 2 old cpu fans and changed the fans for 2 3.5 brushless fans (also old and borrowed from old 486 power supplies) and mounted one blowing into the lower front of the mid tower case and one hanging below the 2 hard drives by 4 plastic ties blowing up at the hard drives, which are offset in the bays so basically both of them are being cooled. The air inside of the case is much cooler. I just knew that it seemed alot warmer than it used to be and since I knew heat kills. This was what I did with old parts from work.

****and since the case was also old scrap from 386 days, I felt that cleaning the power supply inside and removing the fan so I could sure that the blades were clean again probably helped with the air flow as well. (I think the guy who's office the pc was in was a smoker because I couldn't believe the crap that was inside and around the fan of the power supply)

hehe ,AT cases make for a good supply of fans:) ,I took a fan out of an old IBM 8086(?) monster PSU! ,man that thing blows well!:D

But Antec's doc says front case fan has no, or even neg effect, by study. So they put a nice fan direct above the CPU.

He does(link?)? ,well sometime ago when I 1st fitted an extra fan (front lower case fan blowing in)it lowered the case temps by about 4C ,adding an extra exhaust fan (the IBM 1) lowered it another 5C or so.
I would say both work well ,especially together :)
