For those of you with the Antec Truepower PSU's with the fan only connectors (or any PSU that'll limit fan speed), you can disconnect the fan's 3pin connector to the card, and hook it up to a 3 pin to 4 pin (molex connector). Then put that in with the fan only slot from your PSU. I'm not quite sure what it is running at in comparison to the regular speed. I was using the ExperTool from Gainward and was running 50% 2d and 50% 3d. It seems a bit quieter.
I am using THUGROOKS GTU bios which puts idling at 1.1V, but those temps are between 50-52C idling, and during full load (playing ut2k4, then tabbing out in the middle of a game) I've seen it go up to 72C. Right about where it was before.
Unfortunately, since my modified BIOs doesn't give a true indication of idling temps as comparison to the stock Ultras, the loading temps give a good idea of what to expect. My card is overclocked to 430/1200 for 3d applications, and 350/1200 for 2d.
I think this is a good way to quiet down the GPU fan with little to no cost (assuming you do have a fan-only connector on the PSU). You just have to have a 3 pin to 4 pin adapter. The card's temps run well within spec, very easy to "install" and "uninstall" and it is quieter than it was before.
The PSU raises fan speed automatically based on ambient temperatures within the case.
I have heard of hooking it up to a fan controller, but thats alittle bit of money, and too much hassle to get it quiet. There is also the typical VGA silencer, but I didn't want to permamently modify the card, and spend $40 on a cooler. This is a much cheaper, and easier to install solution. I havn't seen this posted before, so I thought maybe I should share.
Thoughts? Opinions?
