So I just migrated my Latitude with an i3-2330/4GB/320GB to Win8. I noticed my WEI scores changed as follows:

Win7 Win8
CPU 6.5 6.6
RAM 5.9 5.9
GFX 5.8 4.6
GGX 6.3 5.6
HD 5.8 5.8

So my CPU goes up a hair but desktop graphics and gaming graphics both take a substantial hit. Anyone know what's up? Just crappy Intel drivers? Photoshop seems to run as well as before and I'm not gaming so it's more curiosity than anything.

From what I gather, Windows 8 actually increases the number of UI elements that are done in graphics hardware instead of software, so if you have an IGP as opposed to a GPU, then that could easily explain it. Could also be that drivers still aren't as optimized as they could be given that Win8 only went RTM a short time ago, and before that it was still basically a moving target.

Basically, Win8 puts another layer between you and your programs. An added layer requires a little extra navigation. That is just another way of looking at CI-Scott's observation.

I think the scale was the same and the increased range was to compensate for faster hardware that maxed out the old range?

That's always been my understanding too. MS was to increase the scale with every iteration of Windows to accommodate more powerful hardware.

5.9 - Vista
7.9 - Windows 7
9.9 - Windows 8

Scores shouldn't change just because the OS was upgraded, the driver is involved as well. I think the actual measurement will be game performance, and I haven't seen any major warning articles saying performance is demonstrably worse on 8.
