low wireless net signal after upgrading?

Alright guys, to refresh this situation so you guys won't have to go re-read this entire thread again, I used to get wireless net signal in my detached garage located at the back of the house. All of a sudden I stopped getting the strong signal after upgrading from DSL to verizon fios, I then upgraded to the latest quantum router but thst did not help. I also upgraded the wireless card on my pc, that did not help so my next step was to get a pair of powerline adapters, connect one to the router which is located at the front room of the house and the other in the last room at the back of the house so it will create an access point mid-way between the router and the garage.

I just received the adapters and they work, right now testing connections in another room in the house. Before I should setup the 2nd router in the back room for access point, I would first like to run an experiment to test the signal strength when plugging the adapters into a power strip as opposed to a wall AC outlet. The pc I am testing with is a Dell inspiron 530s, I am only seeing "wireless" signal strength testing utilities online, is there something I can use to test the internet signal strength my pc is receiving from the wall outlet then plug the adapter into a power strip and test again to compare please?

powerline ethernet adapters don't work when plugged into surge protectors.

Damn then that's a big problem for me as all the wall outlets here where I would like to plug in the adapters are in use which means I will still need to run long cat5 cables.

Plug the adapter in to one outlet and then plug everything else in to a power strip. Or get pass through style power line adapters.

Well, the problem is that the wall outlets are physically located a little distance away from where my pc's are located so what I see it, it's either I run a long cat5 cable or use a power strip.

Wait a minute, it does work! I just plugged one adapter into a power strip but get this, that power strip is plugged into yet another power strip and that second power strip in plugged into an extension cord. Tomorrow I will try plugging the other adapter into the same power strip the router is plugged into and will report back here if both adapters work well when plugged into power strips.

Is it JUST a power strip, or is it a surge protector power strip? The later (generally) won't work. The former is just undesirable as you are physically grouping it with a lot more potential noise sources.

Yes, just a regular mutli outlet power strip, I have a Surge protector on the router.

Just tested by plugging one adapter into a surge protector and the cable into the router and it works, the net is just as fast and youtube video loads and plays like normal.. Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to test the connection in the garage, will let you guys know how that turns out.

No, you guys were correct [sorry], plugging into the surge only worked for a little while then lost the signal so now I will see after a week or so if it will continue to work on the power strips, get back to you guys on this.

Finally, the net worked in the garage for the most part, only a couple of times did I lose signal and that was with both sides plugged into power strips, I'll test again next saturday and if any signal dropping then I will plug directly into wall outlet.
