Low virtual memory, wtf?

I have 640 megs of memory and my virtual memory is being managed by windows.

If I leave my computer idle for 5 minutes the memory usage jumps to 630! When I become active again, move the mouse, the memory usage drops to 100 mb and everything is dog slow.

I left the computer for 30 minutes, enough to turn on the screensave and when I get back it says virtual memory too low. What the hell.

I ran adaware, nothin'. I'm baffled.
 
I'm using the slideshow one that comes with windows.

Also CPU usage doesn't sem to go above 20%, network in/out doesn't peak to anything either.
