Do any exist ?

The reason being is my case has usb ports on top and my keyboard tray clearance is only like 2 or 3 inches max.

The normal usb thumb drives I hit when my keyboard tray comes out.

I found a solution but wanted to make sure it was ok to do first or safe to do ? A 4 port USB 3.0 hub connected to one of my monitor's USB ports ?

Are you looking for an actual SSD or a normal thumb drive? Because your title says SSD but then your posts talks about thumb drives and usb sticks.

Why is this ?
Because it is generally crap if it's not. Unpowered docks that feed off the spec power from USB are prone to disconnects, generally won't work with anything requiring more power than a keyboard and mouse, and probably have most shoddy ic's and controllers internally.

Something you might be looking for is something like this

https://www.amazon.com/VisionTek-120GB-Pocket-Solid-State/dp/B00O0NV5HU

But you might want to look at something closer to an actual thumb drive with great performance.

https://www.amazon.com/Lexar-JumpDrive-128GB-Flash-Drive/dp/B00S6DBGKG

It actually performs better than an SSD in the size of the thumb drive because of the complexity of an SSD controller (and some tech that doesn't really work well with USB removable media). It's smaller as well. There are others but I have a 32GB and 128GB version of them and they are a dream to work with. For some reason they seem to be out of stock around so maybe they are coming out with a new model. But Kingston and Sandisk have similar USB 3, SSD like performance, thumb drives.

How about something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Ultr...49872&sr=1-1&keywords=128gb+flash+drive+small

I have a Samsung version and sequential transfer rates are in the range of 150MB/s up and down. I can run some random read benchmarks this evening if you're interested.

I wouldn't get that one. All USB3 Thumb drives are not the same. I have a 16GB version of that Scandisk and I get less than USB2 Speeds. The type of nand and the controller make a big difference. That was why I was pointing to that Lexar (RIP). While I am sure there are low profile but decently fast Thumb drives, that is not one of them. Also I have had it slow down to a crawl because it gets too hot.

Here is a reviewer saying the same thing about the 128GB version

It does not transfer data as fast as it is supposed too and burns you. I was excited to use it for the first time, plugged it into the USB 3.0 and attempted to move 45gigs of data with a 40 MIN eta, yay! After five minutes the 30 min eta went to 6hrs and 45mins! the drive was slowing down... but why? I touched it and it burned me, so I busted out my thermal imaging camera to check and it was in excess of 130 degrees Fahrenheit, after it cooled down and started transferring slower. This is obviously a dangerous product as applied heat of 131 degrees Fahrenheit causes second-degree burns on exposed skin, how can they sell stuff like this?

Agree that a thumb drive may be a bit better at not disconnecting randomly (though that's still a problem I've had with a few thumb drives) compared to an external SSD.
But if you're going to do any random writes to it then the external SSD will likely have a pretty big advantage.
Some larger USB flash drives (particularly) from SanDisk do not lag behind as much as most however.

I have both Sandisk and Samsung versions of those tiny flash drives. I haven't done benchmarks, but the Samsung is noticeably faster for large file transfers.

I used to have 2 Sandisk, but one of them died with no warning.

So: buy Samsung not Sandisk if you want one.
