Low Power system for outdoor use?

I am looking to build a low power small and rugged system that can take some minor abuse. I want it to be travel worthy for road trips and possibly run off of a solar panel. Anyone have any recommendations for a motherboard to start with and also info on a case/enclosure that would fit the bill?
