My Dell (AGP) has a 250W power supply. Replacing it is not really an option at this point. I want to get a good card to play Doom 3, Half Life 2, etc. Most newer video cards today seem to require 250-300W+ video cards. According to anecdotal reports on the internet, even some video cards that are rated OK on 250W systems run into difficulty on such systems.

Anyway, are there any good AGP video cards out right now or coming out soon that will work well on a system with a 250W power supply?

i was in the same situation as you, i decided on the 9600pro. its not all that good, but its as good as you can get as far as lower power consumption/performance.

HA they are going to use MORE power than these are most likely. saving up is all we can tell you seeing as we have no idea the specs of ur comp and wut kind of money you are willing to spend on a videocard.

Yes, but the high power video cards will only be bought up by a small number of enthusiasts. My computer can't handle the most costly cards today, so I am obviously not looking for tomorrow's $500 video cards which will no doubt consume a lot of power. Most video cards are sold to OEMs like Dell. Dell does not want to buy a bunch of cards that will consume 150W (which is what I'm hearing the next generation of top of the line cards will push) for its main lineup of computers. Most consumers don't want that, they aren't willing to pay for it, and it requires them to spend more money on the power supply.

So Nvidia and ATi take their new technology after they've milked lots of money off it from the high demand enthusiast consumers, and release video cards based on the same technology with fewer transistors, a lower clock speed, cheaper memory, etc. to the OEMs, cards which I expect will have much lower power consumption. That's how it's always worked. Sooner or later their will be an "MX" card by Nvidia based on the GeForce 6800 technology, one made for the OEMs that will be thrifty in power usage.
