Low power cpus

Ok long story short I ordered a $10 video card off ebay and wound up getting an oem cpu this one

This says its 65w. It this considered a good low power cpu to use for a windows home server or should i look some something even lower?

You ordered a video card, and got a CPU? Was it wrapped in the bubble wrap that was around the video card or padding the box? I got a free CPU once that way.

If you got that for only $10, you got very lucky. Its pretty low powered but I guess you could undervolt/clock it some more depending on which motherboard you use.

No somehow they accidentally sent me the cpu instead of the video card. When i got the package it looked to small to be a pci express video card. I opened it up and its the cpu i linked above. Problem is if i send it back the $10 video card i ordered now becomes a $15 to $16 purchase. It was a used Radeon x600 pci express 128 mb low profile card. I brought it to use once in building a windows home server machine.

WOW... definiately keep that CPU. It is pretty low power and should work great for a windows home server. Now look for another $10 video card.

I think on the low end the Regor pulls 0.85v.

If I recall correctly the 790gx chipset pulls 1-2w less than the 780g-785g chipsets, but what you probably want to look for is a motherboard BIOS with the right combo of C1E, STR3, etc., for sleep/hibernation and 'down-clocking'

There are also some 3rd-party utilities to help you manage voltages, clock, multi's, etc ....

That is fine for a WHS, especially at that price! I will say that I think the best CPU's for the money (WHS wise) today are the new core i3/ i5's. Performance equal or better to a Q6600, power of an Atom N330/ION (actually in my case less power).

Did you consider e-mailing the seller and letting them know they made a mistake. Ask them to pay for shipping the CPU back and have them ship you the video card you bought.
