Finally got my system stable and running thanks to help from other threads, but now im a bit suprised with my results from 3d mark03.
I know some people dont like 3d mark, but the point is that my mates system scored around 5300 and i got 4800.
His system is an AMD XP 1.6Ghz, 1GB 333Mhz RAM, ATI 9800 pro not overclocked. Mine is AMD64 2.2Ghz, 1GB 400Mhz RAM, ATI 9800 pro not overclocked. Both machines running XP SP1

So what could be the reasons for my system getting such a bad score, has anyone else got a similar system and run 3dMark?

I havent messed around with mem timings or anything they are all set by SPD.

any sugestions?

He's probably got all 3D settings set to "high performance", not "high quality".
Try overclocking your graphics card to the same GPU/RAM frequency as R9800PRO's (3DMark2003 is very GPU bound, Celeron 1.6GHz + R9800PRO gives you about the same score as AXP 2.2GHz + R9800PRO).

Thanks for the replies,

just to answer a few questions (and ask some more!)

Sorry im a bit of a noob when it comes to this, whats AA and AF?
not sure about the Radeon, 256bit or not, but as my Radeon is still in the post, i actually used his radeon for the test, so we were totally equal on graphics cards!

I take the point about 3dmark being GPU intensive, but surely i should not have scored less?

start-settings-control panel-display--> settings-advanced--> 3D - uncheck "use custom settings" if it's checked, then set Direct3D to performance (move slider to the left) - apply, restart, then try again.

Make sure every display settings of Windows and 3DMark are the SAME for both PCs before start benchmarking.

For example, AA and AF settings, 3D quality, screen resolution, color depth (16-bit or 32-bit), refresh rate and .... must SAME for 2 PCs if you want comparable results.

Close as much background applications (Antivirus, Firewall software...) as you can before running 3DMark.

For your information, AA and AF is some sophisticated calculation for GPU to improve graphics quality. Higher the quality, slower the performance.
