Low/mid cost Linux/Windows Media PC Guide now available

I've posted a Web guide for cheap/mid cost 6100/6150 media PCs and am looking for feedback.

It's at http://clients.teksavvy.com/~mreid/media_pc_2006.html .

It is focussed on Linux, but works with Windows of course.

A budget MSI K8NGM-V 6100 config is at http://clients.teksavvy.com/~mreid/media_pc_2006.html#HardwareLists and a nicer MSI K8NGM2-FID 6150 config is at http://clients.teksavvy.com/~mreid/media_pc_2006.html#UpgradedHardwareList .

The software portion of the page is at http://clients.teksavvy.com/~mreid/media_pc_2006.html#Software . There is a text file at http://clients.teksavvy.com/~mreid/setup.txt which is a half-notes/half shell script that I've used to get my 6150 config to go from a stock Fedora Core 5 install to my current media config.

I more or less have just about everything running now, although there remain some issues with the PCI tuner cards (USB works well).

Please post any feedback here.

Mike.

Unlike my old ASUS SIS board, Linux LMsensors actually seems to work on the MSI 6100. At least it works for CPU and Case fan speed (but not northbridge, but there is no northbridge fan on this board). It also reports CPU and "case" temperature, but I have no idea where it measures "case" temperature. It doesn't report the 6 different voltages I see under Windows though. The Speedfan feature only works for the CPU fan as far as I can tell.

Hi, How do you get 6 different voltages reading in speedfan? In my MSI 6100, I only see my HD temp.

Sorry for the confusion. I should have said "Smart Fan" which is a hardware feature in the MSI boards and can be monitored or configured under the BIOS H/W Monitor submenu.

I was not referring to the Windows SpeedFan program.

Hmm, I just noticed that the MSI K8NGM2-FID printed manual only shows 5 voltages that can be monitored in BIOS but I do recall seeing 6 using the MSI "PC Alert" program. Perhaps they added VDimm? (I don't want to reboot right now to check).

In any case, I can see these voltages when in the BIOS setup, or using MSI PC Alert, but Linux lmsensors wasn't able to show any voltages, despite various mods I tried with the /etc/sensors.conf file. I'm happy to have the 2 fan speeds and 3 temps, but I still don't know what "temp3" is, and I have some doubts about whether or not it's hard disk temperature:
