Low IO performance under Linux

We're getting pretty low IO performance on a linux server that will be sent to a customer on Monday. We ran some database tests and the numbers are about 10 times slower than expected. The box has SCSI hard drives, so I'm wondering if there some sort of configuration settings that can be changed. If you know of anything you'll be my hero.

What is it, like a raid array or something? What SCSI devices, what sort of setup do you have?

I'm not sure about linux, but under Windows if you have the wrong transfer mode set for drives IO will be quite a bit slower.
