low idle temps, high load temps - e8400

about a week ago i took off my stock heatsink from my e8400 and to dust it out. after i dusted it off i removed the old thermal compound that's been on there for 2 and a half years with an arctic silver kit (remover, purifier, compound/paste). 4 tries of this in a row and each time my computer would be turned on realtemp reported the idle temp going from 40 celcius to 110 celcius in the matter of 60 seconds while just looking at the desktop. on the 5th attempt to reapply the paste i now can run my computer and go on any application with a temp of 40-50 celcius BUT if i go on ANY video game such as LoL or battlefield 3 my load temp shoots up to 90 celcius before i decide to just exit the game. i'm not that tech savvy and i was wondering if anybody had any suggestions as to why this is happening

the fan is running yeah, but for some reason it sounds louder than it did before i took it off the first time.

i tried putting it in the middle and putting it on 4 times and when it didn't work i decided to clean a flat head with alcohol and smear it as thin as possible across the processor part and that's the only way i've gotten my computer to idle under 50 celcius at all.

so while the computer was on sleep mode i tried pulling it out a bit to test it's tightness and it seemed tight, but i still pulled one of them out and pushed it back in and i'm floating around 60 celcius while playing bf3 now after playing for 5 minutes, which is much much better. i'll look into the hyper 212 as well. thank you digital 🙂

also, what would be a 'healthy' temp for an e8400 not overclocked under load for, say, like 30 minutes of playing battlefield 3

thanks guys! one last question: if i wanted to re-attach the hs and only have one batch of compound left should i smear it thin across the cpu or should i just do a droplet and put on the cpu? the drop in the middle method doesn't work for me because i'm bad at the taking off and putting on off CPU's and also the pins to attach the hs to my mobo suck and it takes like 3 minutes to put on if i can even get it on so i might smear the compound around in a bad way
