Low Heat Intel CPU $75-100?

Hi, I have a LGA775 board that's going into a SFF case, and I'd like to find a cpu that has a relatively low heat output. My price range is about $75-100. I just built something similar for my niece with a Pentium D 935, and she immediately had overheating problems, so that's why I have this concern (looking into her prob shortly). This isn't for any hardcore overclocking or gaming.

thx,

brad

PS-- the motherboard is FoxConn 945G7MC-KS2HV

E2160 or E2140. They're not specifically low-heat processors, per-se, but the Core 2 architecture runs much, much cooler than either Presler or Prescott. They overclock really well, too.

Hi.

Need exact make and model of your motherboard, and BIOS version if possible.

ah, yes, you beat me to the punch-- I just edited my original post...

regarding the bios, I will update it to whatever the latest is when I do the build:)

What they said, if your motherboard supports it, if it doesn't, you can get a decent mATX board for $50 that does.

Also, undervolt it and overclock it at the same to fit the original power envelope. It won't go as high but will still run cool.

hmm, that's weird. Why would this board support Conroe but not Allendale? I already bought the board, and here's the cpu support list. Going with a E4400 wouldn't be the worst thing, though. http://tinyurl.com/ytvkwd

wow, even at this time of night, Foxconn replied to my support request within minutes and tells me that the E2180 is indeed compatible with the latest bios update!

Even the celeron 430 would probably work fine. It's only 35 watts output, so it's going to be cooler than any dual core.

Maybe it isn't night time overseas?

well, wherever they are, that's a darn fast response compared with all other support requests I've made via the internet in the past. Their website says they're in California, but who knows where the web requests are routed. Anyway, I'm happy, and that's a good thing!

I just put together an HTPC with a Celeron D 360, and with the stock cooler, at idle, it doesn't even get above human body temperature. Simply amazing. 23C (73.4F).

Well its more then 100 dollars.

But im running a E6300, half cache of a E6600 so it runs cooler, Passively on a TR120Extreme @ stock settings.

I believe a E4400 would be a better value, seeing how their cheaper. But :T

Would you then have to Under Clock? Any numbers?

Intel L7500

http://processorfinder.intel.c...tails.aspx?sSpec=SLA3R

Dual core, 1.8ghz, 4MB cache, voltage 0.975v to 1.062v

Intel E2160

http://processorfinder.intel.c...tails.aspx?sspec=sla3h

Dual core, 1.8ghz, 1MB cache, voltage 1.162v to 1.312v

These cores are essentially exactly the same (aside from cache). Reducing the voltage is not a linear decrease in heat output.

Both of my E4300s and a recent E2160 based PC i built had no problems running at 1.025v

One of the E4300s actually went down to 0.950v

This is lower than the 15w TDP L7500 SLA3R (lower than the low end stock voltage, and less cache).

Voltage makes a much larger difference in thermal output, i would nearly ignore clockspeed.

I noticed, at least in terms of heat output, a .0125V increase produced as much heat as a 150MHz increase on my quad core.

What then is the "Failure Mode"? Does the PC refuse to POST and you then bump the voltage until it POST's?

I would expect that L7500 to go to even lower voltages than your E4300, assuming you had a tuneable MB and the skill to tweak it. Easy for a skilled tech for one PC, not practical for a production run of 1000's.

Any C2Ds would seem the basis for a low power PC, except that so many other components are NOT low power. The PSU comes to mind as the worst offender. Hence a laptop would seem a better low power choice, inasmuch as it's a much more tightly integrated package.

I'm keenly interested in low power for my every day PC, inasmuch as I live Off-the-Grid - Solar Electric.

Thanks for the data.

e2160 is 85 at newegg, e2180 is 99. either of those would be a rockstar of a deal for her. You can undervolt it, etc, then when she comes to you in 3 yrs saying "my computer is too slow" you can crank up the vcore and oc it to 3.0 and be a hero for her and your wallet!

wow. e2180 is down to 96 shipped. read the customer review on it. amazing.

here's the 2160 link if you want to save some $$.
