Low fuel efficient cars

Wow, my car gets really crap mpg (I've never bothered to work it out before):

It costs me £25ish to do a 92.8 mile round trip to a client I visit regularly.

My car uses Super Unleaded, which is £1.149/l at the services I use very regularly on the way.

That works out at:

£25.00 / £1.149/l = 21.758l
1g = 4.546l
21.758l / 4.546l/g = 4.786g
Fuel consumption is 92.8m / 4.786g = 19.38mpg

I'm looking to get an Evo 9 MR FQ360 is a few months time. I can't imagine it being much worse than my current car.

Does any one else have a really bad fuel efficient car? If so, post here.

btw my car is a Impreza WRX with PPP.

Edit: Sorted out my SI units so it makes sense; the maths is still correct though.

The UK cash for clunkers scheme isn't the same as the US and even if it was I would be expecting a lot more than $3.5K for it. Plus I would be trading it in for a less fuel efficient car; f*ck you politicians.

Almost 20mpg isnt too bad. My van only gets 12mpg if I am lucky. I guess it depends on how much you drive though.

I just drove back to Georgia from Wisconsin in a 2004 Expedition. I refilled that 28 gallon tank 4 times total. During my 2 month stay in Wisconsin I spent over $600 in gas. Sucky.

Are these American MPG or Euro MPG because I see people compare cars saying look this VW in Germany gets 15 million MPG but they do not use the same gallons. It looks like you're using the euro gallons.

This is, for the Americans following along at home, you're getting 16.14 US mpg which in my books is crap! Is that highway driving?

I'm using euro gallons in my calculation.

The majority of that journey is highway driving. I admit, I drive it fairly hard on the non-highway bits of the journey (about 10miles of it).

On the motorway my car is at 3.7K RPM max, but usually a lot less due to traffic.

Which motor is in it? FWIW I had a best fuel mileage of 29mpg (american units) in my STi before I started modifying it. Sounds like something is wrong with your car if you are getting numbers like that.

Worst I ever drove (not owned, thank goodness!) was the first work truck I had here. 89 Dodge pickup with the tool bin rear end (instead of a pickup bed....we call them telephone repair vehicles). Really heavy truck with a V6 under the hood.

That thing got 14mpg on the highway, and 10mpg around base! :shocked:

Had to take it out to one of our services recreation areas one time (usually used something with better mileage, but needed my bin tools for this job), ~250 miles round trip. The truck had a 13-14 gallon fuel tank on it, but we took an extra 5 gallons of gasoline in a can, just in case! :roll:

I've ridden it in the rain a few times. It rarely rains here but when it does it's not enough to keep me off the bike.

Hah. The worst I ever had was a blown 383 stroker motor in a '77 El Camino. What a ridiculous vehicle. If I drove it really mild, I got 10 or 11mpg, and if you got on it, it'd go mid single-digits easily.

This is really close to how it sounded, though the one in the ElCam was a little more cammy.

I'm honestly curious about what sort of MPG to expect from Cruisers like the Nighthawk, Harley's, etc. I know they aren't as good as sport bikes but I don't think I could ever bring myself to owning one of those. The riding position is just completely incompatible to me.

Some cruisers are absolutely awesome, others are less so. The Harleys I don't recommend, it's all about style/noise, totally not worth the price unless you have money to burn and status/looks are all that matter.

VTX and Magna will give you 40-50+mpg in most situations, and they're pretty stout. The Magna 750 will throw down 12s in the quarter, which is on pace with a lot of sport bikes. VMAX is a hair behind the Busa in the 10s.

It really depends on what kind of riding you do. If you ride a lot, a cruiser makes more sense to me, ride more upright, more comfortable, other vehicles can see you better. Most sport bikes need you to lean in to have the best balance, and that's not always comfortable for a long period of time. But to each their own.

Its a 2.0l turbo upgraded to 265BHP.

I don't think there's a problem with the engine; its sounds as sweet as a nut and has been serviced by Subaru a couple of times (including hooking it up to their diagnostic equipment)and they've never found a problem.

The strange thing is that if I drive the car nicely, I don't notice an improvement in mpg over when I drive it hard.

The only thing I need to sort out are the wheels. I put aftermarket alloys on the car in the New Year and the handling it noticeably worse; I'm going to change the wheels back to stock.

I'm looking at getting the Evo 9, not 10 (the 9 is a much better looking car in my humble opinion). If the 9 has a similar fuel economy to the 10, then it may turn out to be a little better than my WRX.

Sport bikes don't get great mileage. Mid 30mpg or worse once you start modding them or riding them hard...or both. I get about 45mpg city with my SV and mid 50s freeway and I cruise along at between 5-6k rpms typically with runs up to 10-11k frequently.

A good friend of mine rides a Ducati GT1000 (kind of a retro looking Ducati) and he gets around 35-40mpg. I've ridden it a few times. Nice bike, decent suspension and brakes but it isn't any faster than my SV.

The heavy cruisers probably get mid 30mpg. Probably worse once you starting modding them.
