I have a radeon 9700 pro and it get only 72fps in counterstrike w/ max quality settings and only a few more fps with max performance settings
why is it that slow ?

your config is limited to 72... you have to change it to 99

change the fps_max 72 line to fps_max 99 in your config.cfg file

you've got one hell of a system to be getting only 72fps in a moldy game like counter-strike 😀

that is not slow, that is what it is supposed to do, well 72fps anyway; i do not see how you are getting more from changeling to performance settings.

vsync is not going to change the framerate lock on the engine and turning it off is not a good idea unless don't mind the broken images that come with out of sync frames.

2-step resolution:

1) disable v-sync

2) in the game, press the ` button (the button to the left of "1"), then type in "fps_max 100" without the quotes

mrwizzard, the human eye CAN detect more than 60fps, although 60 is regarded as very smooth.

try this: fire up counterstrike (or any half-life game), press ` (the button to the left of "1") then type in "fps_max 30" without the quotes. that will lock the fps to only 30. see how choppy it is? now change it to "fps_max 100". much faster right? try changing it to 60. it will be smooth, but not as smooth as 100.
