Low FPS UT2004 /w 32 players

Hey All! I recently have been loading up some older games to see how they run on my new video card. I purchased an X800pro. I have not overclocked it and is running at standard 470/450 clock speeds.

Now to my problem. I run UT2004 in onslaught and I can't get more than an average of 20-25fps with 31 bots+me. No matter what I do. Also at times it will drop fps down to 10-15fps if in a large open area.

However if I run 1 bot + me I can get 80-100 fps constant. I have played around with tweak guides and am now running d3d9dx.dll instead of the standard driver. It seemed to increase by about 5-10 fps. I also played around with all other video settings.

The strangest thing is that if I run at 640x480, lowest detail, low fog etc etc it still doesn't improve as soon as the 31 bots are loaded! I get the exact same fps!! According to ati catalyst center I am not running aa or af at all with direct 3d or open gl settings. The first thing I thought of was aa/af was full but even then it should run reasonably smooth.

Obviously there is a bottle neck! However that being said, with my old 9800pro card I didn't have this problem, in fact I never noticed low fps ever!!

Here are my system specs:

p4 3.0 using p4p800
2x512mb memory (how do I know what speed my ram is? I think I have 3200 but not sure)
sapphire x800pro running temp of 48 degrees max load with cat 4.9 *with ut2004 accorting to atitool

Now I realize that the p4 isn't as fast as some amd chips out there but I don't have any low fps in any other game. Even doom 3 with 1280x1024 with aa/af I get 48 fps with timedemo 1.

I would appreciate any advice or ideas you all might have. I do not post much to this forum however I do feel you are all the most knowledgable when it comes to performance problems with pc's.

Thanks,

Mike

update - I didn't realize my brother had purchased a x800pro and softmodded it to x800xtpe. However I have now corrected that and put everything to normal. Updated benchscores as well.

Well, as a rule adding more AI uses more of your CPU. Seems to me that your CPU is your bottleneck at this point, but I'm not an Intel person so I can't say for sure. P4's were never great at gaming, which is the only reason I can think to explain your low 3DMark03 score. Other opinions?

I had no idea that p4 would be this slow. I am not sure if this is the reason though because of no problems before.

LOL it's not a P4 problem, it's a "31 bot problem"! Each bot requires a lot of CPU cyles for the AI, and this drops your performance big time. You will notice that 16 bots and especially 8 bots run substantially better.

In this example, playing online with 16 or 32 players would be smooth, because the CPU doesn't have to control their AI; it's already done by the other players.

However, a 32 player botmatch is a CPU resource killer.

Maybe with dual core down the road in a couple of years botmaches will be sped up substantially (here's hoping). In the meantime, start playing more online ;) .

Very true! It does only happen with Bots! Online it is a lot less of a problem!

Update!!!! I noticed my voltage on my power supply wasn't too "accurate" I had just some cheap okia power supply! I installed a 480 watt dual fan and voila! PROBLEM SOLVED!

I now can overclock and run everything really well!

I get 3dmark03 score of 12083! I get 63fps timedemo demo1 on Doom3 @1280x768 and last but not least I can play against 31 bots in Onslaught!!!!!

Furthermore I have tested out my cpu at 3.6 ghz and it is rock solid running 3dmark and doom3 for over an hour! Temperatures all below 50C...

Thanks for your help guys! I can't wait for Halflife 2 when I see my fps drop again! haha
