Low FPS in UT2k4 - Whats to blame?

On most maps my fps is around 40 which is fine for me but on some it wont go above 20 or 25. This happens mostly on big onslaught maps with lots of players. I am running a 9600xt, an athlon xp 2000, and 512 mb. I'm thinking that my cpu is the cause of this because when i set the res. down to 800x600 or even lower it still stays at very low fps. I'm waiting for my upgrades to come from newegg and hoping I spent the money in the right places (2400 mobile, nf2 mobo, 512 dual channel). Is UT2k4 just a really cpu intensive game?

There's another thread about this, in Software I believe. It's probably your 512mb of ram, but there are some settings that can help.

I don't know about that. My system only has 512 and it runs it silky smooth.
Probably your CPU but it would really help if you told us what kind of system you had when asking what component might be the problem

disable shadows, i noticed that it put a hurt on my performance. also, o/c your cpu if you can. and check task manager, during a game of onslaught RETAIL, NOT demo, i peak at 750MB. having a gig of ram will help loading times for sure, should help a lil if FPS.

I've only tried UT2004 on my top 3 fastest boxes so far, two of which has 512mb of RAM. It does load a bit slower than my fastest machine which has 1gig of memory, but once loaded, the game is very smooth. As far as I can tell, the game runs just as fast as UT2003, if not a little faster.

Your comp should run onslaught fine provided you have your settings adjusted right. Are you using aa or af? what are the in-game details at and res? I'd guess you could run fine at 1024x768 with medium details but no aa or af and get 40ish fps in onslaught games...

I would say disable some of the unnecessary GUI effects that you don't notice. If you don't care too much for how it looks, then decrease all of the effects. Are you using AA? Look at the utility that comes with the drivers for your ATI card and maybe scale the 3d settings more toward performance than how it looks.
I don't see anything wrong with your ram or cpu. I have run ut2k4 on a 2400+ with a 7200 radeon and 512mb ram. I just set all the in game effects to low (I don't care about eye candy) and I am able to play the game smoothly. So it's not your specs, it's more likely your settings for the 3d and in game effects.

EDIT: Do you have the latest driver update for your card?

I have a geforce 4mx420 and I can run UT2k4 flawlessly on 1024x768 with everything on normal. Its quite hilarious, ironic that I'm still waiting for my Radeon 9800 pro to arrive but I can start playing unreal :)

Ya, when I loaded UT2K3 on my P4 2.26 @ 2.8GHZ machine with a TI4600 and ran into lag with everything on high, I was amazed...UT2K4 looks great, is very playable, and it much more fun than 2K3, it simply rocks!

my guess is cpu and ram. i have a 2.4ghz xp processor(overclock) and 1gb ddr. and a weenie 9000pro ati. it runs smooth at 1024x768..course i ratched the options down to keep the card from dying, but i keep other stuff like physics at highest cuz my cpu seems to be able to handle it. your xp 2000+ is 1.6ghz.

I've got just 512MB ram and the game runs perfect. Athlon XP 2500+ (overclocked) witha 9700 Pro video card.

Maybe you have AA/AF turned on somehow? Might want to check. Doing a defrag/spyware scan/virus scan couldn't hurt.
