Low FPS in q4

Got my 3600 running at around 4800+ speeds right now with stock cooler. I have 6x AA and 16x AF. During some fight scenes I am dropping down to 30 fps in quake 4 with the newest 1.3 patch during single player. Is this normal, or do I have something wrong. I thought this card would eat up q4 alive, and spit it out. If I lower it down to 4x AA and 16AF I do yeild better results.

What res dp you have it at? 6xaa and a high res would prolly be abit to much textures for a 256mb card to handle.

Try turning it down to 4xAA and see what happens. Your card really should be chewing up Quake 4, though. A comparable nVidia card would be faster but the X1950XT is a better choice right overall.

When you say "None of the visual enhancements checked.", does that mean you are running it at default settings or the lowest settings?

I meant Temporal AA or High quality AF

Yea, based on this http://techreport.com/reviews/...rce-8800/index.x?pg=11 you are not getting what your suppose to. You should not have to turn down AA or AF. Any driver conflicts ?

Nope, this is a fresh format. Newest drivers, Catalyst drivers, and newest chipset drivers. I was running at 6x/16x though. I may lower it down to 4x/8x. I can play in 4x/16x and barely got under 60 at times when I go outside.

In that review, they are using a Core 2 Extreme. That could be why their's is higher. Lower yours to 4x/8x and see what you get. If its close what they got, then you should be well on target. Wouldn't think a Core 2 would make that much of a difference at a low res even with 16AF.

that is weird. my friend has a x1900xt and a a64 2800+ and can play high settings at 1024x768. try enabling multi-core support from the video advanced settings. that should get u a nice speed bump.

(psssst......dont buy q4 to play singleplayer! dl 1.4.1beta patch from idsoftware.com and q4max .78b from q4max.com for some great multiplayer fun!)

Enabled the multi-core and that helped some. During intense battles I'll average 40-60 fps in 1024x768 4x AA 8X AF details high.

Don't know if that is normal or not for a x1950xt.

It's weird, I was able to play the same game at the same resolution (CRT Limitation) with all the eye candy on and 6x FSAA and 16x Aniso even with Adaptive Super Sampling, and never diped below 40's in the worst case scenario, it happened like twice only. Even with Prey which is more demanding never had such issues. Looks like a Driver Conflict

Well, I used all the newest drivers for this install, and a fresh format. I'll remove the drivers, and reinstall using driver cleaner pro. I'll just return it if I can't sort it out over the weekend.

agreed

are you using vista? I have the same problem... poor performance of my x1950pro in 3d games. After researching, i realized it was because of poor catalyst 7.6 on vista 64
