Low FPS in CS:S

Okay, lately in CS:S I have been getting low FPS every once in awhile. It seems random that my frames will drop down to the 15-30 range (6800GT max settings). I normally get around 60-110 or more. I am guessing/hoping it is from the last patch (because I also get random game crashes while connecting to servers sometimes). Just want to know if anyone else is having this problem.

Make sure in your .cfg file there is a line that says "fps_max xxx." If not, put it there, and make sure the file is not read only. It solved the problem for me.

I am having the same problem. Some people are saying that it is the latest patch issue.

Where is this config file? I search the whole Valve directory and nothing contains "fps_". Please advise.

Out of curiosity, what does that paramater actually do for the program? I'm not sure how limiting the maximum FPS would help avoid sudden drops in the FPS. Does it somehow stabalize the FPS? I'm sure that it does something since it obviously worked for you.

Yeah some people have been reporting FPS issues with the last update.

I ran some tests the other day with the 5.9 Cat's, all settings maxed.

1680x1050 4AA/8AF = 82.00

1680x1050 0AA/0AF = 115.00

X800XL at stock settings, I can't recall my results from earlier but I'm guessing these are lower. Hope that helps.
