I had this system:

XP 2000+
MSI Kt3ultra 2 Mobo AGP 4x
256 ram 2700
gfti4200
and a Chieftec 360w PSU

I used to play CS 1.6 with this system spec with no problems,100hz,800x600 with vsync on,100fps. No troubles at all. Then i wanted to try out CS:S and bought myself a XFX 6600GT AGP(Not aware of that my other hardware wouldnt handle this).
When i got the GPU i tried it with games and benchmarks and i thought the GPU was bottlenecked by my older cpu,ram and mobo. In cs 1.6 wich i play a lot, i had lesser performance than what my old ti4200 gave me. 50-100fps.
I searched forum up and forum down for an answer to that, and tried almost everything. Then i bougth my self new CPU,RAM and MOBO.

THis is my sys spec now:

Windows XP Pro SP2
MSI Neo Platinum 2 socket 754
AMD64 3400+
Kingston Value 2x512
XFX 6600GT AGP 8x
Chieftec 360W 17A on the 12V rail

And i still get sick fps drops with this system. Same as with the older mobo and cpu together with the XFX Card.

*Temp is 45-60C. Usually around 50C.
*7800points in 3Dmark03
*Installed all the latest MOBO and Nforce Drivers.

Could it be my PSU? I just dont know what to do anymore.

Thanks for all answers in advance.

2 things:

I have a problem with HL2 because of it's inconsistant performance anyway. That could be one of the problems - if it doesn't happen in other games.

Maybe your graphics card is the problem. XFX isn't know for puttin out quality hardware. See if you can RMA it and get a different brand. That's the only suggestion I have.

A weak powersupply would only make your system unstable. I don't know if Chieftec is a reputable name or not, but if it is of good quality, you should have no trouble.

You really think a different brand is going to make the entire graphics card perform worse than a Ti4200? I don't really have a solution for you but I think you should definitely wait for some other ideas before you return it.

It's not your PSU...i have a 300watt with the same amps on the 12v rail...runs fine...no, runs GREAT...

it might be the XFX...try underclocking it to 500/900 (that's actually stock) and see if that fixes it...try new drivers, cleaning off the slot on the card (that goes into the AGP slot) with rubbing alcohol, um....other then that i dunno...it MIGHT be the XFX brand, as they arent that great

Um?????? No way a 6600GT is gonna get solid 100 fps in source with high settings......

Just to let you know I have near exact system specs as you with a 6800nu and I get 60-100 fps with high settings with no aa/ff.

I think your fine. If you want 100 solid fps, you should of gotten a GT.

I know that i cant get 100 fps solid in css. But now i have from 30-140 and i think it should be more stable than that.In css i play at 800x600 with everything on high,no aa or af. But CS 1.6 isnt so demanding, but also here i get sick fps drops.

Maybe you should tone a few, not all settings down to medium. I guess your 128 bit mem and 8 pipes are bottle necking you.

I have a 9800Pro@XT and run 12x10 with high settings and it never goes under 45ish. If CS:S is your thing, you're better off ATI maybe.

Dude, I don't get solid framerates either and I have a flipping 6800GT. It's just how it goes with this game. It's EFFED. The game needs some major fixing by valve. I'm satisfied with how my game runs, until I get in a server with like 24 or so people in it. Then the framerates just go to hell, even if I lower my resolution to 800x600 I still get crappy rates.

I usually play cs_office and my rate fluxuates anywhere from 30-130fps. It's utterly stupid and annoying. But there's nothing you can do about it. It happens to everyone, even people with high end video cards.
