Low end cpu comparison for a friend

Got a friend with an athlon xp 1600 - he wants to know if a sempron 2200 would be an upgrade.

Seems to be same clock speed - but the sempron has 333mhz data path.

Also I'm aware the sempron may perform more calc's per clock cycle.


Any good benches around?

Not much IMO.....The 2200+ sempron is like clocked at 100more mhz (1.5ghz) and has same cache...333fsb wasn't that big of a boost....The 2200+ is not meant to be a comparison to the Xp line....

trust me I had a 2400+ sempron and it was no better if not worse then my 2100+xp in same system....

Clock speed matters more in their comparisons and I have heard nothing about added calcs per clock....The semprons in this low range are not to be confused with the semprons that are A64 derivatives of the sckt 754 chips with the 64bit ability disabled.....

I would think he would be better off trying to pick up a used 2700+2800+ AXP chip.....

Also the 2400+ sempron ran way too hot at idle though the idle to load swing was small there was no real headroom to OC that chip at all IMO....

Fancy that clock speed ends up mattering most for AMD processors than Intel ones, no?

It does when you are comparing 2 processors which are basically the same chip with differnet names. Obviously it matters more than anything else.

Best bet would be to get a mobile chip and overclock, if he doesn't mind that.

There have been some good deals on the socket-A sempron 3000 lately (2.0ghz, appears to be a barton core). That would be a significant upgrade over your friend's current processor.

Otherwise a used or mobile AXP would be best; if your friend is at all comfortable overclocking, you should be able to get something running at over 2ghz pretty cheaply.
