low cost security setup?

I'm interested in a basic camera that hooks to a Windows pc AND the software to do basic surveilance of a small room here..

I guess ideally motion sensing to go into record, and then saves the files on the hard drive.. Seem like I can save many hours og basic video on a hard drive these days.

Just need a way to later look back at what happened in the room in case of trouble.

Simple and very low cost seems ideal.
Any suggestions?
