How about learning some self control? Yeah the first week or two sucks. All you do is crave foods that you can't eat. But you have to make the consecious(sp?) change for the better. I've been on Atkins for 9 months, 6 months of that have been maintaining my ideal weight. Atkins just isn't a fly by night diet, it is a lifestyle change. When it comes down to it, I would rather pass on eating the buttery popcorn, than going in for a triple bypass when I'm 35.

Just my $.02 which isn't worth jack!

On another point most people think this is a NO carb diet, which is incorrect. Sure you drop down to 20g per day during Induction, but after that you begin to slowly add more carbs back to your diet to maintain your weight.

I also must agree with the recent post about eating out gets boring. I find myself paying $7 for a chicken sandwhich without the bun, and salad.

Right. I'm can take in 100 carbs a day and keep my ideal weight. I used induction to drop 30 or so pounds, and now I limit my carb intake to stay here. I can actually eat a sandwich a day and a little starch/sugar here and there. I don't really count my carbs anymore, but I've actually lost a couple of more pounds in the last few weeks.

IF you deplete carbohydrates for a long period of time, you will lose lean body mass (muscle) from the lack of glycogen, and your thyroid gland will slow its output meaning that your metabolism will slow down. Folks - i've said it before...The atkins diet WORKS if you do it right (obviously because no insulin = hard to get fat) BUT there are so many people doing it incorrect by not counting calories, etc so they won't make any change. In my opinion, therer's really no need to deplete carbs anyway - its all about WHAT TYPE of carbs you eat ! Obviously, if you snack on bagels and white bread or anything else ladden with HFCS or sugar you may gain alot of fat but i've never seen anyone get fat from fibrous carbs or low GI carbs such as oatmeal (non instant) and whole grain wheat bread. Combine that with a regular exercise program and anyone can lose weight! I give credit to atkins for bringing the fallacies of the FDA food pyramid to light, but his approach is WAY too extreme IMO.. Low carb just dehydrates you and the first 10-15 pounds is just water.
You are completely wrong. First of all, with the atkins diet, you NEED to drink 10-15 glasses of water a day, not just the 8 recommended. This is because it does lose water weight. Secondly, you NEED to not have any carbs at all for this to work. It works because in order to turn protein into glucose, your body burns more calories in the conversion than it gains in the glucose. That's why you can eat until satisfied/full and still lose the weight. It's a truly amazing thing.
The hell are you talking about? The purpose of atkins is to avoid glucose..and insulin secretion to lose more fat. Glucose will kick you out of ketosis , which is the entire point of the atkins diet! Besides, protein is much less efficient at converting to glucose than carbohydrates...the only protein that converts reliably into glucose is concenrated or hydrolized whey protein - other types don't convert nearly as well.

You my friend have a huge problem. You cannot read and stuff. I never said anything about eating glucose. I was explaining WHY it works. And it's because the CONVERSION OF PROTEIN INTO GLUCOSE burns more calories than it gains. You also noted that in your reply, furthering your stupidity. Please stop posting.

I've been on it off and on since November, and have lost 65lbs. I have found sort of a modified Atkins that seems to work for me, go Low carb (also low calorie) M-S and eat carbs on Sunday. It seems to keep the insanity away, and the sudden rush of carbs on sunday don't seem to get absorbed or hurt it much.

Went from 265 lbs size 40 pants (or 42 even) to 200lbs and size 36, honing in on about 190 and 34's.

Congrats!

That's one thing I really like about Atkins... How it can be modified to suit YOU.

Some people are under the misconception that it's a very stringent ZERO CARBS diet, which isn't true. It is important to keep carbs very low during Induction, as to get your blood sugar level in order. After Induction, the plan gives you the option of adding more carbs each week, while keeping track of your weight loss. At some point, you'll add enough carbs and you won't lose weight.

It's up to you to decide how many carbs you want per day. Some people will lose weight quickly with more carbs than other people will. Some people will choose a slower weight loss curve in lieu of a larger choice of foods.

What the f*ck? Not only do you NOT know what you're talking about, I think YOU'RE the one with reading comprehension issues! Who the hell eats glucose? I am talking about various macronutrients being CONVERTED to glucose! The introductory period of atkins - GLUCOSE ISNT SUPPOSED TO EXIST IF YOU DO IT PROPERLY. KETONES DO. Glucose isn't present when ketones are, your body burns more bodyfat as fuel when switching to ketones for energy.
