Hello,

If i were to game at 1680x1050 with a gtx260 / radeon 4870 , which processor would prove to
be better ? e7500 or x2 550 BE or x4 620. In my country , all three cost the same. The x3 720 is far more costlier. So i'm restricted to one of the three above mentioned processors.

I intend to use this setup for 2 years.
Right now , when it comes to gaming , majority of the games seem to be optimized to
use only 2 cores. What will the situation be after a year ?

Thanks.

My guess is the situation will be the same. 550BE provides the best gaming performance currently and it overclocks (and overcores sometimes) nicely as well, so that'd be my choice.

X2 550 BE, thanks to it's L3, is faster than the X4 620 per clock, per core. And like you said, 2 cores are still common for games. I'd give that one the edge, but especially so if you plan to unlock more cores.

I'm a very mild OCer. Currently , the 550 BE wins. But what about upcoming games in the next two years ? Even now , the x4 620 isn't fairing too badly at 1680x1050. I'll admit , its about 15% slower on an average comapared to the 550.

In the coming two years , more games and eventually most games are going to be optimized for quad cores. So , after a year will the x2 550 still win because of the L3 cache or will the x4 be better thanks to the two extra cores ?

Try to find some Athlon X4 reviews with Far Cry 2 and Grand Theft Auto 4. I've noticed they are the most mulithreaded games so far. Best example is here:

Far Cry has them similar, GTA is quite clearly in the 620's favour. So if future games continue to use more than 2 cores then the 620 will be the same or better. I might be changing my vote to that for you - especially if you don't want to try to unlock extra cores on the 550. Even without extra cores, 550 BE is unlocked multiplier so hitting 3.5-3.8GHz will be quite easy. It really is quite a hard choice! But looking at stock speeds the 620 can't be worse for the long haul assuming more games start using more than 2 cores.

You probably wouldn't notice a difference with any of the choices, with the exception of games which heavily take advantage of more than two cores. In this case, the 620 would give you an edge in performance over the dual cores.

Even though just two cores in the 620 are slower than the two cores found in the 550 and E7500, the 620's speed is more than fast enough for current games which only utilize dual cores. So if you're looking for any kind of longevity, I think the 620 would probably be the best option. Although whether or not the extra cores will pay over a timespan of two years is hard to determine.

Let's make your decision a little more interesting:

$105 MSRP?

http://www.techpowerup.com/103..._Phenom_II_X2_555.html

Following a recent move to speed-bump the Athlon II X2 with the Athlon II X2 255, AMD is planning a similar update for the Phenom II X2 lineup, with the Phenom II X2 555. This model makes it clear that an increment of 5 in the model number indicates bump in default clock multiplier of 0.5X, while that of 10 indicates a full 1.0x increase. Keeping with this trend, Phenom II X2 555 is clocked at 3.20 GHz (16.0 x 200 MHz), a 100 MHz increase. Based on the 45 nm Callisto core, the processor features a total chip cache of 7 MB (2x 512 KB L2 + 6 MB L3), a 4000 MT/s HyperTransport interface, and an unlocked bus multiplier. Expected to be available later this month, the Phenom II X2 555 could carry a price-tag of 80 EUR

lol (it doesn't change much, unless the 550 drops in price when 555 launch...)

Thanks for your opinion. So , In the end you vote for x4 620 ?

Yes, like i said it doesn't change much...
You should buy a 620, the performance today is acceptable and in 2 years time probably there will be enough games to utilize 3-4 cores.

Will either of these boards support the x4 620 ?

Will i have to do a BIOS update for it work ? that will be difficult as i dont own any amd processors.

The first one does with F7 Bios. I saw nothing on the 2nd one from the CPU support list. It may or may not work as both support Phenom II's.
