Low 3DMark06 Score?

Hi guys,

I know 3DMark isn't a game but it is a useful tool to gauge the configuration/setup of a PC.

With the following rig:

E6600 @ 3.3
4GB @ DDR2-734 5-5-5-15
Asus P5B Deluxe
NV GTX280 @ 648/1404/2322 with NV 177.79 official betas
OS drive: Seagate 7200.11 1TB SATA
Vista x64 SP1

I get 12519 in 3DMark06

with the same setup/OS install but with an 8800GTS 640MB with 175.xx drivers I was getting about 10600.

Does this seem right that I wouldn't increase my score that much? I see people with 15-16k in 3DMark06 with this card with better CPUs though (Duo @ 4GHz or quad core @ 3.2ish). Is CPU that much of a factor?

FWIW my Vantage score is:
P8474
CPU 10072
GPU 5741

That is without the right PhysX driver installed I think.

Cheers

dont worry about 3dmark06, compare the vantage scores (and more importantly, real games) which will show much more of a difference.

Running an old banchmark and low resolution will do that. At this point it's limited by CPU. Try a higher resolution with some AA and compare.

Vantage scores:

Before having the right PhysX driver:

P8474
GPU 10072
CPU 5741

After latest PhysX driver:

P12666
GPU 10582
CPU 30970

Seems about right?

Another question, 3DMark06 never seems to go above 60fps. I checked nHancer and my default NV profile and Vsync is app perf. Is this normal? I remember seeing 3DMark06 on another machine a few years back and there was tearing, which would indicate no vsync. I see no tearing though.

I  every time I see a CPU score for Physics on a Nvidia card in Vantage.

My setup scored 18.8k with a 700 core....seems like something is off for you. Except 06 really loves the high-clocked quad.

in 06 when i swapped out a 4850 for a 3850 the score went up by maybe 200pts total, so maybe even w/ the 3850 i am cpu limited - e2160 @ 3.0GHz. don't know. and fwiw, in 06 i get frame rates of 60 w/ no tearing.

3DMark is the most valuable and indicative benchmark for gaming performance of your gaming system. My system with an 8800GTS 320mb scores 12,567. Your system with GTX 280 OCed scores 12,519. Therefore my system is faster for gaming than yours.

Where do you think the major flaw in this argument is? :cookie:

QFT...
I'm shocked by reading of what people are saying like "no it's not a game".
Duh!
Don't we all know that?
