Low 3dmark with GF4 MX440

Whilst my 9700pro is RMA'ed for being DOA, I purchased an Aopen Aeolus GF4 MX440 AGP8x for a very small amount of money, just to last me for a week or 2.

Thing is, its awful in games (yeah yeah I know), but my 3dmark is @ 4900, rather than something like 6000-6500 which is what most other people get.

I am running the gf4 MX440 with the following system:

XP2500 @ 2.3Ghz (11.5x200 stock volts).
Epox 8RDA3+
1024MB DDR400 Twinmos w/winbond chips.
Hard drive, audigy 2 bla bla.

Has anyone else had a similar problem? or is it just a pants card / incompatibility with my motherboard?

Also, when I get my dosh back for my 9700pro, which would you recommend for future dx9 games... the Radeon 9800 pro 128MB or the GeForce FX5900 128MB (I can get them both for the same price).

Thanks for your help guys n girls.

Did you get the slower SD-RAM version of the card? The memory bandwidth on the 440MX can vary considerably (from about 6.4 Gb/s to as low as 1.3 Gb/s, depending on type of memory and manufacturer). You score is exactly what my daugther's system gets (XP2000+, not o/c) with a GeF2 Ti. This is not surprising, since I've seen the slower 440MX cards come in as low or even lower than the GeF2 Ti (i.e. in the 4000-5000 range in 3DMark2001) ... it's only the top-end ones that will get you 6000-7000.

3dmark with hardware that does not support its version of directx results in very poor performance.

Example, my voodoo5 got a score of 500 and got completley owned by a geforce2 gts
but then i fired up UT and crushed it

The GF4 MX440 isn't that bad, it's performance is good unless you run at very high resolutions which would be silly with a budget video card IMO. I think you have the SDR version of the GF4 MX440 which really sucks, it's not any better than a rubbish GF2 MX.

With 3dmark 2001 se you should be getting atleast 6000 points with a gf4 mx440 ddr version.
